I tried, I tried really hard

Post by BazzBass » 07 Apr 2018, 12:43

how hard have you tried to help a music shop stay in business?

John Reynolds Music City, Adelaide. I tried,I really did

1978 Bought a Cimar Jazz copy and a Coronet 30w Bass Amp
1980 Bought a Boss PH01 Phaser pedal
1984 Traded the Cimar in for a Vantage thru body walnut bass
........
1997-98 Recorded three bands I managed at John Reynolds Recording Studio, a total of 4 full length CDs
.............
2013 Bought an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro guitar
2014 Bought a Fender Am Stnd P Bass
2014 Bought a MarkBass LM250 Blackline head
2014 Bought a second Hartke xl210 cab, MXR Bass Comp, Bass Octave Deluxe, Bass Envelope Filter and a few more
2014 Bought a Tascam DR40 portable multitrack recorder
2014 Bought two Yamaha HS5 powered monitors
2014 Bought a Takamine ABG and gig bag

the bass dude there saved me a fortune on all this stuff, he has now moved to Holden Hill Music.

I guess I can safely say they didn't go under due to my lack of spending there :)

Can you remember a similar shop you've bought a lot of gear from?

I can, and they are still doing just fine. In recent years they opened the largest purpose built music store in Australia by square footage (or something similar). Mostly through exclusive stock deals from what I’ve been told.
Strings: Fender, Framus, Warwick, MusicMan, Custom
Knobs: Mesa, MarkBass, Fender
Patch: TC Electronic, Aguilar, too many to list

What’s the shiny new place?

These days I tend to spread business around after being burnt a few times.

I'm giving you a yellow card for ignoring the first line in my OP ,AND for being a wisea$$ :rolf:

It is sad to walk into a former emporium to find all the 'departments' rolled into one small floor space, drums, bass, guitars all in one small area.

For a while, JRs offered me the best of both worlds as Chris would match the best Oz online price on everything I bought. So I got to try it out and pay online prices :) it couldn't last of course,an unsaistainable model

I'm guessing that former "Berran, Narcdor, is referring to Better Music, in Phillip, Canberra. Unfortunately for me, it is about a 10 minute walk from my front door. I have to restrain myself from going there.

Yup, ten minute drive but just as dangerous! You walk anywhere in Canberra?

To be fair they always looked after me, which is why I kept going back and can’t complain about lack of competition.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON

actually that was a name we used for a cover band because I found a cool Dr Smith and Robbie poster with that on it hehe

I'm sure I've seen your band name on gig posters or gig listings in the past. It stuck in my mind as I loved Lost in Space. Where did you play/what area?

in other news, the Netflix reboot of Lost in Space commences tonight (13/04/18). It looks really, really good.

must be someone else Andy, we only used the name and poster for one or two gigs, in the 90s. Actually the first band to play at the Crown and Anchor, lovingly called the Cranker here in Adelaide. We were the FIRST,and I had to convince the owner to do it by promising a big crowd. On a Sunday arvo lol, yeah, only 50 people but on a Sunday arvo in a pub not known for live music.....25 years later one of Adelaide's busiest live venues. I accept full responsibility for this hehe
