Yeah, WOW.

Two ready-to-go boards, and on the right a billet which is definitely 3, and maybe 4 more boards. Beautiful.

So which one will it be?

Michael

Unlined fretless isn’t an option is it? I’d hate to cover any of it up.
Strings: Fender, Framus, Warwick, MusicMan, Custom
Knobs: Mesa, MarkBass, Fender
Patch: TC Electronic, Aguilar, too many to list

Not for the Special Q build, Nick, but I have a body (new Manta shape, northern ash body with walnut contrast layer and zebrano top) that was meant to be an unlined fretless but I completely screwed up the neck so there's one board that will not be covered up - not high priority though.

Multitasking: glueing on the headstock wings (wenge, of course) and epoxy-ing in the carbon rods for the neck-through with wenge fretboard option "7". I am so excited about this one, first neck-through Kermit with very different pickups and pickup positions ... .

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: a little bit of self-promotion ;)

How did you know, Bruce?

Same delivery but for a fellow OBFer ... of course, you'll never see or hear me with flats of any kind.

Would have made a nice top in itself (glued together the other way, of course): the wenge contrast layer for the neckthrough Kermit:

Slow slow slow - wrapping up my lecturing duties for the semester tomorrow and will then have more time available to progress the wood part of the build.

Received these today (thank you, George, for organising them). Very useful 4-way rotary switches, as found in Dingwall basses:

Good to see Blaine in the workshop today finished the super-secret project.

Bad news first: the wenge board #7 is toast for two reasons:
1) The nut end of the board came unstuck while radiusing with the router, and I didn't notice it - the board is now significantly thinner at that end, plus there's a groove as well at that end. Sure, I could try to sand it out but then we're looking at even less material.
2) Unfortunately there was a structural defect going all the way through the board that might have caused problems further down the track.

I need one of those radius sanding machines!!!

Anyway fallback option is now #8 which also has the structural defect (it's from the same side of the original piece) but it doesn't go through so I'm much more comfortable using that. And it looks almost as good.

Good news: progress with the spalted maple Q. Mind you, this is probably the last spalted maple bass I'll make. No matter how careful you are with the sanding the soft parts will always sand back a lot quicker so you end up with little dents, particularly along the edge. I've saturated the lot with superglue, will sand back in the next couple of sessions, and repeat to get back to a "level" surface.

Cut and radiused the birdseye maple board, fit the neck and prepared the holes for the bolts. Still need to install the threaded inserts (that'll happen tomorrow) and have trimmed off the excess material to get the final neck taper (that's happened after the pics were taken).

Couple of board close-ups:

And here's the bolt cluster (bolts inserted for illustrative purposes only):

Like I said, the neck is now trimmed back to the final width all the way.

Might be able to glue the board on over the weekend.

Regards,
Michael

I had the same radius accident as you. Ruined a perfectly good ebony board doing it too... check that tape sticks people!

One of those things ... .

Started hand-sanding option 8 and while it won’t be a 5 minute job I might get it done in 30 😉. Definitely easier on the wood.
