Looking good Ivan. Definitely want to catch up in the new year and have a look at this in person.

Looks great Ivan. What colour is it going to end up?
Hey George, if it goes to plan it will be a natural burst.

Haven't seen you around for some time Blaine. Will definitely need a catchup in the new year.

Thanks Pete. You didn't see the failed take 1 though. The good thing about working with wood is that you can usually just sand it all back and have another go.

A bit of spray booth action last night at the Melbourne School of Guitar Making. Big thanks to David for his absolutely stunning work with the spray gun:

As already mentioned elsewhere, VERY nice, sophisticated, classy - just like the builder.

Michael

Ha ha....But in all seriousness, I'm extremely pleased with how this is turning out. None of which would have come even close without the guidance, assistance and encouragement of people like yourself Michael. Not to mention the wealth of knowledge shared so freely by David and Rob. Words can't do justice to how grateful I am to these two guys. As usual, I'm just hoping I don't somehow stuff things up at this stage.

Very happy we caught up last night. Lovely seeing that very special bass get painted and the attention to detail with the fret work. What's the next one going to be?

Great to see you too Blaine......it has been a while. Terrific work on that violin too.

What's next.......just want to finish this one and play some music. So many ideas, so little time :rollno:

The violin came up ok, just don't look too hard, it plays really well and Sharon was blown away so I won Xmas this year. I think the boys did a terrific job and I'd like to have a shot at doing another one down the track. You always do a bit better next time around.

Quick update on progress made today. 42 degrees outside, just a cool 35 in the workshop.

The head stock inlay has been seated and glued in - looks like a big blob at the moment. Currently drying overnight for sanding tomorrow.

The battery cover has also been shaped. I ended up making a new one using an alder offcut so that it matches the wood used on the back of the bass.

It's ready for spraying once the weather cools down a bit.

looks fantastic, what's the deal about the logo inlay? How does that install work?

Hey George, this is my first time ever trying a mother of pearl inlay, but basically you trace around the inlay and then carve out a cavity for the inlay to fit into. The photo's below show my "attempt", using Davids Foredom 1070 unit. It's a bit like a dentist drill:

Once the cavity is ready, its filled with a mix of araldite and fine ebony dust to make it black. The inlay is inserted onto the araldite which is then left to dry for 24 hours and then sanded back. I'm not totally happy with the way it looks right now so will have to come up with a rescue plan :eyebrow:

That's right. The blob has now been sanded back, but it's not the result I was after which is something like the example below. So some recovery work is needed....but should be ok I hope.
