Aria Pro II 77 Precise Bass - Law suit era. Project! Pics up

Post by Rocksolid » 30 Nov 2017, 18:15

I recently took possession of a P bass version of these basses in a transaction. No electronics, Pickguard had shrunk to the point it was not able to be fitted. The neck on it was killer though, and thought it might be good to mod/ get going again.

The Ibanez basses from this era are supposed to be gaining value - but the AP IIs although know for being of great quality, don't seem to be increasing in value.

These were all made in Matsumoku factory, Not sure if this factory is held in the same esteem as Fujigen, but seems to be well respected.

Any way, I have purchased a set of Dimarzio P ups, a PJ set from on here, and being an exact Fender clone (headstock shape and everything, hence the law suit!!) I had a Fender Pick guard which fits it exactly, which is hilarious I think.

I've dropped it off to get the route done etc, I should have it back in a week or so. If it turns out great, I'll play it for a bit and then probably get the Body refinished. I will leave the Neck as is, other than getting the laquer repaired over the decal so it looks nice and clean.

Pics to come!

Aria made great basses that era. If neck is perfect and weight is good, then go for it. Refin optional IMO.

Pics please!!!!!!!

Wondering, whats the measurement at the nut?
Look like a winner, good tuners and body would could be alder or ash or basswood???
hows the weight?
And what colour you going to refinish her in?

It's a little on the heavier side, which makes me think it's not basswood. Could be wrong though.

Haven't got the bass with me to measure the nut, it feels like a standard P Bass neck.

I was thinking a blonde finish, but I sort of like the mojo too. Not sure what I'll do.

Might be Shen Ash?
Let the mogo shine! throw on a black or tort pg and your good to go. Save your money for a nice bridge and setup and do a few gigs with her.

Only a PJ? C'mon, I was expecting a fretless conversion with 2 darkstars and a tremelo...

I know right? Getting soft in my old age. I had considered fretless for it. We will see.

It will be getting a Black PG, and the diMarzio P ups have cream covers. Controls will be stacked knob V & T for each P up

Looks a lot plainer grain than the sen ash P I had from the Matsumoko factory, but that's just one instance to go by.

Chris Lau, Lauda Guitars doing all the work including set up, and fret level if needed. Neck is killer so I think that's unlikely.
