Solid Wood Pickguard Sheets.. Where from ?

Post by NotTheFish » 22 May 2017, 16:51

Where can you buy various sheets of solid wood that are around the 3mm thick mark that wont break the bank. I wouldn't mind having a crack at making some pickguards in P and J styles. Any sort of wood is of interest. It can always be stained or dyed to colour. Or is there anything you can think of that could be re-purpossed like say might be good ?

Have a chat to the guys at Carba-tec in Springvale. They have a variety of small pieces of timbers of different species as a lot of their clientele are hobbyists/ garage woodturners/tinkerers etc. I bought some thin pieces of cedar off them a couple of years ago so I'd bet that If they cant help you with a suitable 3mm veneer they'd probably be able to put you onto someone who can help you out :)

I just made a 3 mm thick electronics cover from a left-over piece of my spalted maple top at the MSOGM using the thickness sander. Not sure if that helps but maybe contact David Searle directly and ask if that's something that could be done there. I mean, a pick guard is part of some guitars and basses, right, so it's "guitar making" ;) .

From Italy? Did you just order the wood Jeremy, or completed guards?

Nice

Do try David at MSGM next time. He made a terrific tort pickguard for my Yamaha, and I've seen a wooden pickguard (flamed maple from memory) on one of his 5 string builds.

Nice find from Italy though :yep
