Over the course of the last 3 years, we have gone from having 6 electrical engineers across the site to two.
And the other EE has only been here for 3 months, so he's still quite green.

My duties have expanded tremendously, and the amount of work that I have now on my plate is overwhelming. I'm not coping well at all, and I'm getting to a point where I would just love to throttle my manager.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Feeling your pain Terry, about to throw the towel in myself. An email came across my desk today that almost had me walking out then and there. Think I might go drive buses.

I had to leave work early today... my eldest had surgery this week and was away with wife and when wife came home, she had to go to work...

anyway... I brought some work home... discoveries...

1) Bring work home, but only bring it for ONE thing... more than one is a distraction ...
2) NEVER have a work PC or access to work email at home... it's a distraction ...
3) Working at home eliminates the biggest distraction ... people... I get CONTINUALLY interrupted at work.

I've counted, on a typical work day, I get 15-20 interruptions on things NOT related to specific tasks that I am working on.
We used to have ONE morning meeting, that would typically last 15 minutes... now we have these you-beaut "stand up" meetings ... I have to attend THREE ... sometimes FOUR... so EVERY morning... that's meetings from 8 to 10! That's 25% of my work day SHOT TO PIECES!!!!
Then there are meetings for projects, meetings for turnarounds... I sometimes have 50% of my time taken up in MEETINGS!
add the 15 interruptions that take 10-15 minutes each and that's another 2-3 hours per day!!!!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! :ticked: :ticked: :ticked:

On my year-end review, my manager writes "Kerry doesn't manage frustration well..."
OH REALLY!?? How about I stab you in the neck with a ballpoint pen? What colour ink would you prefer?! :bat:

I find it more distracting at home, it’s nice to have an office. I can’t wait until we go open plan next year so my productivity can go down.

Going part-time earlier this year took some discipline not to fall into the 60% pay, 100% work trap but I did manage and feel like a different person. I don’t think I would have retained my mental health staying on full time.

Not a rant but a reaction to the worrying accounts just above!!

Regards,
Michael

Our little boy had to do his first overnight in hospital a couple of nights ago. He's ok, gets discharged and they try to Bill our private health - gets rejected, twice.

I call up the health insurer, and our boy is not listed on our policy. They have the record of when I changed my single policy to join my wife on a full cover family policy just after he was born (ie with the intention of covering him), but he's not listed.

They *can* backdate the date he's put on the policy, but insist they need proof that I notified them of his birth (which will take 48-72 hours while they listen to a recording of my call from back then).

I explain that's not good enough -
1. I've been paying the correct amount to cover him (his whole life)
2. They *can* back date it
Therefore, they should just do it.

That's not enough apparently. I rage to the customer service operator, and the subsequent customer relations operator she passes me onto.

What a tone deaf response 😡
* have just survived a scare with my kid in hospital, hoping he doesn't need to go back in
* it's a few weeks before Christmas and I'm staring down the barrel of having to pay an unknown amount for his treatment (whatever the amount, it's money I don't have)
* I'm being told by an operator that despite having paid the correct amount, despite my wife having a lifetime policy with them, despite the fact that they *can* backdate his addition to the policy, they won't (without proof, which is 2-4 business days away)

I got lucky - my raging got the customer relations lady to check the old call immediately, of course the first thing I mentioned as a first time dad was that very thing. They **** up, he got backdated on the policy, all's well - it only cost me 5 years off my life as I was contemplating how I'd survive Christmas, Dr trip this weekend, where to fit a 4th job into my day etc 😠

I think I'll be sending an official complaint regardless. The *only* reason they wouldn't do the right thing, is greed.

For profit health services don't make any sense to me. Glad you got it sorted in the end but really, it should just happen.

Actually, the not for profit health funds are just as bad. HCF has an app via which you can lodge "some" types of claims. Then, after you lodge the claim via the app, they type up a letter and snail mail it to you - despite having your email address on file (so they can send marketing spam once a week). I don't understand why a not for profit would be spending member's money on postage stamps - that's ridiculous in 2017.

Agreed, that seems ridiculous.

My thinking extends further into socialist territory in that everyone is entitled to health care and there shouldn't be companies profiting from providing those services, not just health funds, there shouldn't be a need for a health fund, it's insurance and receiving health services shouldn't need insuring to guarantee. Still Medicare doesn't work that well either, it's more an ideal and probably not practical.

the wiring on my mum's Mercedes Benz c180 from 1994 has had the plastic coating go brittle and come apart at every connection across the whole wiring loom.

Expensive cars crap quality.

My EJ was 40 years old, had sat unstarted outside for a whole winter, yet started first time. never had any coating on wiring strip itself in any Holden we've owned,.

Meanwhile my Commodore of the exact same age purrs along, no hassle and it has a ton more power than that MB piece of crap. And cost me less that half what the Merc cost. Worst thing that happened was the starter motor went this year and the radiator was replaced about 7 years ago.

My boss is a borderline slave driver... does not know how to give us a break ...
And there’s been so much going on at work the last few weeks that I am very VERY tired and really looking forward to a long, stress-free weekend ...

This morning while I’m on my 5k parkrun (and away from my phone), he rings my mobile ...

The message he leaves “Kerry ... Dewald (his name )” ... that’s it ... no details ...
I call him back, 20mins after message was left and no answer ... AND 1 1/2 hours later (now) and still no additional call ...

SMH !

Kerry one way you look at this is you're slightly fortunate it's taken you this long to encounter your first corporate psychopath. I've worked for several, it's not pleasant.

As for how to deal with it, I could talk for hours about it and still only scratch the surface. I have some resources I could point you to, shoot me a PM if you're interested.

I find it hard to watch The Office, both UK and US versions because nearly every boss I ever had was just like them :)

Yes indeed, that was one of the resources I referred to. I've also read the book he refers to in that interview and its excellent!
