Ebay Scams :-(

Post by Classic5 » 29 Apr 2018, 12:55

Just thought I'd post this here to warn the good folk from Ozbass to be extra wary of ebay these days.

I've bought and sold a number of items over ebay for many years now, not heaps of transactions but never had a problem.

Last week I purchased a used text book for my daughter, not really giving it a second thought. One week later, on the deliver date I get this message from the seller:

"sorry for late delivery, one page of my ebay account had been stolen by a malicious maniac, and I didn't feel safe to do any log in, I am not sure wether the address you provided is for postage or pick up, please sms me again, when and where you want your book to be delivered, sorry for any inconvenience."

Anyway, my first thought was that this is written in an unusual way and seems odd. Giving the seller the benefit I replied with a delivery address. Haven't heard a thing since and it's been 3 days after promised delivery. Then, I notice that the exact same photo of the same used textbook is for sale by another seller. It's definitely some sort of scam by the look of it.

So....I've lodged a refund request through ebay so looks like I need to wait three days to take the next step. I'd like to report both sellers to ebay but there doesn't seem to be any way to do this. Or at least not that I can see.

Does anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing?

Thank goodness it wasn't for an expensive item. But a text book of all things :-( BEWARE!

Keep your eye on the date. There is a limited time to submit a claim and they often delay until that date then go dark.

If you request a callback from ebay they're usually really good. And fairly quick. Get onto it!

or you can do a online chat, https://www.ebay.com.au/help/start_chat?initFrom=HOME
gather both ebayer's item number and some evidence, and send it over, then ebay will handle it.
Used once, happy with the result. In the end, you will receive a email with your complete chat history.

Cheers guys. I've just used the chat function (not easy to find) and it's being investigated. It's not really a big amount of money but just want to stop them before others are sucked in too. It's more of an inconvenience than anything as the book is needed by my daughter for her Tafe course. More delays now.
