Paypal/ebay question

Post by Aussie Mark » 29 Mar 2018, 11:54

Ok, the buyer for my scroll bass is located in Texas according to their ebay profile, but they are asking me to ship to Switzerland. Given they are paying via Paypal, is there any risk to me if the person I'm shipping to is someone who has hacked someone else's ebay account? Once the money is in my hands, I'm safe, yes?

Just don't ship until the money is out of Paypal and into your bank account.,

Thanks Matt, that's how I planned to do it.

I did chat to eBay with my concerns and they said as long as they pay for the item and shipping then it's a sale as far as eBay and I are concerned.

+1 to that. That's how I normally do it too.

Sounds dodgy to me. Why would a Texas buyer want you to ship to Switzerland? What's the story behind that request?

Question: How does this work as a scam?

You've sent the bass to the place that you were told. PayPal transferred the funds, they don't care who sends them the funds, it's all numbers. Does the hacked account realise that they've just lost money and claim on Ebay and/or PayPal, who then come looking for payment back from you? I don't think you can be forced to pay back, after all you've sent the bass off. as you agreed. Problem is Ebay/PayPal have brought a bass that they don't have.

Somebody has to lose if this is a scam and for me I'd not want to be part of that triangle knowingly, but I'm a bit bent like that.

I wonder if this is working towards a situation where the "buyer" claims they haven't received the item? Just a suggestion........

I'd be sending it by tracked international courier, with signature required on delivery

Those things don’t necessarily track across countries.

Perhaps not, but a signature on delivery satisfies Paypal/eBay and protects against an "item not received" claim according to what I can find online

Check the seller rating. If they have a good record that’s fine.

I’ve heard lots of horror stories about ebay and PayPal’s buyer protection policy. You don’t get the cash until the buyer confirms receipt of goods as far as I know.

^ This. I've been buying stuff on Ebay fairly regularly and all of a sudden, a seller contacted me this week wanting to know why I wanted shipping to Hervey Bay when my profile said I live in Sydney. I moved 3+ years ago and hadn't updated it. No-one noticed until now. The seller asked the question, problem solved.

PayPal and eBay are different companies, I’d be checking with PayPal directly as well given the money is the risk.

I wouldn't ship to address not on their eBay account. Ask if they could update their account info. I'd also ask for some ID.... esp Swiss proof of identity/documentation.
