"...there was an increase in participants' concentrations of butyrate, a type of fatty acid that helps keep our guts happy by tamping down on inflammation and producing energy. They soared in the lean participants and picked up modestly among those in the obese group."

Butyrate does a lot more than that - excellent info here.

I'm trying to find a new dojo that teaches the katana, as my last one went into karate and dumped the weapons side of things

Well I've managed to keep up the riding and I can fit into my work clothes again, woo! I haven't managed to keep up the swimming but the twice daily stretching of my hamstrings and lower back mean I haven't had any more disc/muscle issues or even discomfort. I'm still aiming to start swimming again when I move soon as it's within a short walk to a pool. No progress finding sustainably affordable yoga classes.

I've gained 7kg in one year. If I do that every year for the next 20, I won't last 20.

I did kick Cancer's butt though ..... Perspective!

Same here (+5kg for me). Getting fit again is on my to-do list.

We're a quarter of the way through 2018 already - is it time for a new thread @Bassline?

...or is it a tick tock scenario - odd years everyone gets stuck in, and even years we all take a break ;)?

Continued from 2015 thread.

Lots of good info, links, etc worth continuing.

Let's continue the great discussions into this year. What are your health goals for this year?

I'm going to try Petebass's No Sugar approach, did it last year for a while and felt really good. Anyone else tried it? Your results?

congratulations on all of your successes and best of luck with the new goals. I have blown out again.

New (sensible) regime might as well start first thing tomorrow. I'll probably be about 95kg...I'll aim to be 8-10kg less than that and healthier by 1 June.

Congratulations and best of luck to all.

I worked very hard on losing weight in 2017. I started in January and by December had lost 25kg. That was done by a combination of exercise and calorie debt (well duh), mostly in a fairly extreme and not very sustainable diet.

No prizes for guessing my goal for 2018 is to maintain my current weight with a more sensible, sustainable and healthy diet. Interestingly this is actually proving to be trickier than the Big Cut of 2017.

Anyway, things are afoot and we shall see.

Wow, Mike that's a huge effort. I didn't think you were carrying an extra 25kg last time I saw you - what is your weight now, if you don't mind sharing?

I'm looking fit even though I'm at my heaviest ever currently. Waist size smaller, I've put on a few kilos of muscle around the shoulders/back/thighs with lots of bodysurfing/swimming.

Less aching in back, etc with extra muscle. Sleeping better and waking up better in the mornings as well. I'd forgotten how good it feels to be fit & strong.

Thanks Mark. I am currently holding at around 78-80kg. I kinda go up and down in a weekly cycle. Was up around 105 when I started. I *was* carrying it pretty well if I say myself, but it felt wayyy wrong.

For some added perspective, when I was racing pushbikes, I was 65-66 kg (with a resting heart rate in the low 40's), but my days of pedaling 500-600kms a week are long gone. My gut feeling is that mid-high 70kg feels about right for me. Now to actually stay that way ..... that's what 2018 is all about.

Just joined the gym at work...
Need to lose a few kilos around the middle but it's more for back strengthening and general fitness.
My physio finally got to me and convinced me if I wanted to continue lifting amps and standing on stages for 45min at a time I better shape up.
Weirdly looking forward it, having resisted for years.
Gotta be done.
