Since CP's recommendation (eero) isn't available in Australia (and no point importing it either since you need a US phone number to access the app) I've gone with the Velop as there is currently a 25% discount for the 3 unit pack. One advantage of the Velop over the Eero is the fact that the Velop units have ethernet connectors, which is handy for connecting our Fetch TV boxes via a wired connection. The Eero is a lot nicer looking though, I'll admit.

I just saw the repeaters claim 100% speed rather than the 50% of the google wifi, sounds like you picked a winner.

Update after a few weeks with the Velop - very happy so far. Setup is a bit clunky via a mobile app only, and it took two or three attempts to get the child nodes online after the master was set up (but still only 20 minutes from start to finish to set up the entire network), but it's been bullet proof ever since. Once the network is operating the app is very useful - you can prioritise specific devices for more bandwidth, and you can also turn access on or off to any device on the wifi network, either by toggling a setting or via a time schedule - ideal for restricting the times of day that the kids can access wifi.

The biggest advantages over my previous wifi extender is that all 3 nodes use the same SSID, and that the wifi signal is equally strong anywhere in the house.

Nice, thanks for reporting back. Something to consider when I live in a space larger than one node covers.

Well time for opening up this can of worms again. I’ve got a google wifi and it’s stuck at one end of the house where the NBN connection is, and it’s not the end of the house I usually hang out in. I’ve gone over my mobile data cap!

Should I consider another google wifi, noting speed is 50% from child nodes, or replace the entire system given I’ve only made a small investment so far...
Other options
-Velop
-Orbi
-Eero?
Anything new I’m missing considering?

I recently got the TP Link Deco 5 setup:

Easy to set up and I'm getting 29Mbps download speed anywhere in the house and in the back yard too.

Parental controls are handy too. You set up members in the household and assign devices to each member. You can set daily wifi time limits for kids as well as when it stops for them at night and starts again in the morning.

So far so good.

I'm still very happy with the Velop. The only times it's been down since January has been twice for a few minutes at a time when it automatically downloads firmware updates for each node.

One quirk I discovered is that devices on the mesh network can't see our wireless printer unless the Velop is in bridge mode. The only downside to bridge mode is the parental control part of the app won't work, but other than that it's working perfectly. We've got two Fetch boxes, two Windows lappies, a Macbook, ipad, printer, and 4 mobile phones on the network and it copes well even with our crappy ADSL line that is almost 3kms from the exchange.
