so they spend 200 Million to discover that we want marriage equality, which they already knew from polling. Now they have to debate it and vote.

why did we vote then? they already knew our views , and they still didn't listen to us, it was just a guide........

what a friggin waste of OUR money.

why?

coz the Liberals were too gutless to make a stand.

why are they in power then? resign and let Labour make the tough decisions

it's an outrage

So can someone please explain the "religious freedom" aspect of this to me? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but as of right now, I don't see the link. Is is about the right of gays to belong to a religion, or is it about the religions being able to continue to preach that homosexuality is bad?

Bill's captain's pick for Bennelong by-election deletes her Twitter history ....

http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2017/1 ... _23276399/

Kristina explains - ""We actually have scooped up all of the tweets and put them on a hard disc and archived them for the State Library."

Hard disc - is she serious - all the tweets were available online, where does her hard disc come into it? Not a good start to her campaign, even though she's up against the mad rooter and should win in a canter.

Spending: The ABS announcer was pleased to announce it came in under $100m, well under their budget of $120m
It is an unavoidable expense, otherwise "it will never be truly known", at that time, and we are governed by hearsay, for such a deep issue.

Religious freedom: Huge one. Start with the infamous wedding cake one. As a baker, you should be able to refuse to put a message on the cake contrary to your views, yet be happy supplying a suitable cake (IMHO). This has not happened in either Ireland or the US. It is close to the same category of asking an Islamic butcher to provide pork sliders for your SS wedding, etc
Others:
Illinois: Christian bed and breakfast owners are being sued by homosexuals for not allowing the use of their facilities for a gay "civil union" ceremony.
Aus: Two Christian charities have been granted official permission to keep their board members’ names secret on the grounds of “public safety”, after abuse and threats from gay activists forced an IBM executive to sever his links with a Christian education group. At least a correctly worded Act would make such harrassment obviously illegal.
Chile: Printer of Christian faith sued 3 times for refusing to print SS wedding invitations.
UK: Religious schools teaching that same-sex relationships (etc) are against religious doctrine are deemed to be breaking the law (Jewish school not teaching about sexual orientation to children as young as 3)
And we've already had a Catholic Archbishop in Tas suffer the beginning of legal proceedings over distributing their doctrine on marriage to their own members. This will just get worse without appropriate religious protections.
And so on.

Senator Paterson has a press release regarding this:
https://senatorpaterson.com.au/2017/11/ ... -freedoms/
Some points:
>Establishes a limited right of conscientious objection, to ensure no one is forced to participate in a same sex wedding against their sincerely held beliefs.
>Protects freedom of speech so that Australians can discuss their view of marriage without fear of legal penalties.
>Guarantees parents’ right to choose their children’s’ education by allowing them to opt-out of classes that conflict with their values.
I see..............basses!

I see some sections are starting to attack her about NSW Labor corruption.
I thought she was cleared and praised for her evidence.
Typical.

Maybe JA will try to bed her during the campaign, just to really shake things up?

No I can't, Pete. In my opinion it is nonsense, as I posted yonks ago.
The opinion poll was about secular marriage not religious marriage. Accordingly, the legislation will not require churches to marry people against their teachings.
For mine, the religious freedom stuff is about legislating to allow discrimination in areas of life that have nothing to do with the expensive, hurtful and unnecessary opinion poll we have been subjected to., so that it's opponents can pretend it didn't happen.

If Turnbull allows this to be mucked around with he will be toast even sooner than most people think.

BTW I am so glad we only got to waste $100 Million on this farce. :rollno:

Oh and the bakers and florists who don't want gay marriage business can be sure to put up a sign saying that is their position so that me and 62% of their potential customers can shop elsewhere.

"don't want gay marriage business"
But its not a case of that. It is a case of wanting to provide a service without violating their conscience. Hence to offer to provide the cake, but not that message.

Then they can do without the business of those who find their position at odds to their consciences as far as I am concerned.
I suspect most people will find the offer of the half completed cake ridiculous and even more insulting than a flat refusal.

Oh come on! The day the conscience arguments stack up is the day fast food outlets start refusing to serve obese customers, the day lawyers start refusing to represent people who appear guilty, the day beauticians start refusing to serve ugly people.
