Who is obsessive about their coffee??

Post by Rocksolid » 24 Nov 2017, 14:22

Couldn't see any coffee related threads on here.

Who roasts their own beans?

Who is OCD about their barista skills and goes nuts over a Coffee rig as much as a bass rig?

My Coffee obsession started when I met my wife, who is Italian. Until then I had never had a short black etc.

I've been running a Twin Thermoblock Sunbeam manual coffee machine for a few years now, Breville smart grinder, and we buy our beans from a mate who is OCD about his coffee, and roasts some of the best beans I have ever got my hands on!

Just found the deal of the century for a Commercial/Domestic Coffee Machine on Gumtree, with an italian made grinder. The courier has just picked them up, and I should have them by Tuesday!

This time next week I will be using an Expobar Minore (Brewtus) IV coffee machine, with Quamar M80 Grinder.

I was going to ping Funkdragon to this thread. He and I are both fussy, but not as obsessive as you :)

I can vouch for the quality of Steve's coffee making skills.

i need to book another visit so Steve can try out my fly rig :)

I tried doing it the proper way, but my machine was too cheap and kept spitting out coffee grounds (due to my poor skills likely)so I bought a MapItaly pod system. Easy peasy, not so bad now u can recycle the pods

I read a funny story in the Angels biography. Touring outback Oz, they came across a truck stop that actually had a fancy Italian espresso machine. Beudy they all thought and ordered their coffees.

The waitress frothed the milk in the steam frother attachment then...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................added a teaspoon of Nescafe instant and served up their coffees :rolf:

Uh yeah me, pretty sure I’d get laughed out of Brunswick East if I wasn’t...

I’ve gone deep into non espresso techniques and beans as I prefer a strong clean cup but earlier in the year got my first espresso machine, a cheapy DeLonghi EC680 with a pressurised basket but it does decent long blacks/espresso with good beans. I still prefer a really great bean and pour over, takes up less bench space and needs less equipment too.

I am a barista, and I am no longer able to drink coffee because I drank too much and now my body says no.
At least I can still pour.

I prefer a good coffee over a bad one but I don’t think I am very obsessed about it.

I've been to that cafe and it's a great idea, you can choose how much water to add to your long black, or add a splash of milk for a macchiato, and because you did it by hand it's artisanal  :rolf:

I joke but seriously if I get one more filter coffee served in a beaker next to a ceramic mug on a wooden chopping/tray when the mug can hold the entire beaker of coffee I'm going to have a fit. JUST PUT IT IN THE MUG YOU MUGS!!!

I had a mate who was a barista, claimed his Cafe made the best coffee in Sydney, custom blends, barometric measurements and adjustments every half hour, stuff I didn't understand.
Having tasted the best, no other coffees compare apparently, so now he just drinks instant(!)

I got into my coffee a few years ago, have gone through a couple of Baby Gaggia machines, custom blends, decent grinder. These days though, I just use a (really good) percolator on the stove

My coffee making is as old-school as my bass tone :).
I hand grind my own beans and use a stove-top espresso.

Only use the best East Timor beans.

As an Australian born Italian, I find all this talk about coffee machines interesting. Because as identified in the OP, the Italians don't muck around with coffee, and every Italian I know uses a coffee percolator on the stove. Something like this:-

The machines just try to replicate what these percolators do.

Yep, been grinding and making coffee at home with a Rancilio Silvia for... must be close to 10 years now.
Went to a Mazzer Mini grinder about 4 years ago and looking at a Rocket Giotto at the moment because Silvia's getting tired.

Yep. My wife's dad is Sicilian (born), it's what they use, and we've ended up with the stove top unit too :p
