A number of bands do this nowadays, or have everything running through MIDI controllers on sequence.

Jump on youtube and look at premier guitar's rig rundowns, any of the gear gods vids etc, tells you all about their setups, you'd be surprised how many bands have their techs do it for them.

Been curious about the Dr J Sparrow for a while, so picked one up this week. Was running my American Sound on this board with either a Radial SB-2 or Neutrik DI. I want those in with my PA now, so I grabbed the Sparrow. Can have the scoop and top end sizzle the BDDI is know for (this is a clone of the BDDI) but the mix knob helps keep that in check.

I was definitely interested in the Dr.J when I was looking to buy something like it but ended up with the programmable BDDI. It's ok, but I ended up using only one preset anyway and almost never changing, probably could've saved a bit of money just going for the Sparrow.

I'll have to get a picture of my crappy board at some point, currently the signal chain is Boss TU-2 tuner > Empress Compressor > Programmable BDDI > Dwarfcraft Silver Rose V2 > Mesa Subway DI > power amp. Maybe a little silly essentially having two preamps, but the bass driver I use more as an effects pedal and do my EQing on the Mesa. However I've got a PF-800 and Basswitch Sonic Spark on the way so will probably move on the mesa and possibly the BDDI if the Sonic Spark fills it's role well enough :)

I've just given my pedalboard a face-lift, so figured I should post it here ... seeing as I haven't done so to date :)

Modele B arrived from Ryan today. It's on, but the pedal Juice is off. Need a smaller Comp so I can get it back on. Loving the Tubey goodness of the Modele B.

I only just got the Opti-Fet last week off Ming (zhaomh), actually. So far I have only been able to test it at bedroom levels and with little time to really delve into it too much, but have been very impressed for now. Mind you, I was moving up from an old CS-2 so I'd imagine your Cali would put up a much better fight against it :D.

We'll see how it goes when I get to give it a proper work out at the full sound / band / live situation.

My Nano rehashed again with the arrival of the Empress Comp. No wild effects but a great little tone board for IEM only gigs, rehearsal, and anything else in between.

Been happy with this setup for a while now, thought I'd add a new pic. The main chain is Line 6 wireless - tuner - EBS Billy Sheehan OD - Boss EQ - Markbass Super Booster. The EBS is always on with moderate OD setting, plus I always engage the high compression setting. I use the Super Booster mostly for the VLE (as a mild low pass filter to knock out everything roughly above 5khz).
I only really use the wah and Ultimate Drive in a Metallica cover band for those Cliff Burton moments. The wah is linked in before the EBS and the UD is patched into the clean channel of the EBS via it's effect loop.
