Foot Controller Zoom B3

Post by ozrider » 30 Jun 2018, 12:38

I have been using the B3 a lot lately and need to switch between patches mid song, for example, for chorus/verse I use two patches. I hate using the up/down controls. I was thinking there must be an external pedal that can give me more control, so that I can just label the pedal button with whatever patch I want. I have found the behringer pedal and a diy controller. Anyone done this? Or is there a pedal more suited to my needs to save me all the trouble?

Some multi effects have a mode where you press up and down, but the sound doesn't change until you "confirm". This is usually done by pressing both up and down together. Does the B3 have this option?

The B3 just goes up and down as far as I can tell. I just need to have a button for each patch: clean and 2-3 effects patches

Hey matey,

thanks for the link, nice vid too on your setup. I can see why you did the mod, but I don't want to go up/down.

The patches in a visual bank going across for example, or three buttons, one for clean patch, one for synth, one for wah - each being a patch of composition effects. Maybe I just need a different effects pedal

That’s why I sold the B3 and bought a Boss M-3. 4 complete pre-sets per bank, and it’s totally easy to go to individual effects control in each pre-set.

Yep, Boss GT-6B - you can either have banks with 4 patches at a time available on separate pedals, or you can have up and down presents, and turn off/on 4 individual effects within a preset (actually 5 now I remember -the expression pedal turns wah on/off as well). You could certainly arrange it to have Clean, Synth and Wah patches om 3 different pedals and switch between them. You could also arrange to have your clean patch, and have the synth and wah effects as part of that preset and turn then on and off as you need to.

I’m disappointed that the b3 doesn’t seem to have midi with a patch select message as that would make it fairly easy to set up an external pedal board.

Sort of. You can select pages with midi patch select messages but you need to plug the b3 into a usb host (typically a computer) for that to work. It would probably be relatively easy to set up a raspberry pi or similar to do the routing and translation job if you had a good usb footswitch board. That’s starting to be a lot of gubbins to have lying around on the floor though.

Looking around, there are only a handful of footswitch controllers with USB, an dth ebehringer (ick) one is MIDI only so you'd need to add a MIDI-USB widget into the mix (or write your own midi interface for the Pi, not that ahrd to do and a litlte bit of circuitry)

In the realms of the possible, sure, possibly not in the realms of the practical

Ok, so there's nothing that just works, I get it. I just find it a bit like jumping off a cliff everytime you move a patch because you just have to hope you remembered correctly if you have to go up or down, and it just easily gets confusing and takes away from what should be a straight fwd thing

EDIT: I am looking at the Boss products and I really must say I like the zoom, was so easy to gel with, and I don't really fancy having to relearn a whole new multieffects pedal. Sigh.

Well, how many patches would you like direct access to? I have a b1on and I'd be interested in playing around with seeing what could be done with external control of it. I think the primary cost here is going to be the pedal interface itself.

Hm. Looks like an enterprising person is creating relatively cheap things that would do the (foot pedal part of the) job.

I'm going to grab one of the four-button plastic ones and see what it would take to create a rPi box that Just Does The Thing You Want, because clearly More Projects Are What I Need. Oh yes. It'll take a few weeks to arrive, I think.
