Is my compressor functioning correctly?

Post by blizzard » 16 Jun 2018, 18:24

Hi all, I have a MXR Bass compressor M87 and I like it however it seems to function differently from what I would expect. With the ratio knob set to 4 it sounds like it's compressing the signal more than with the knob set to 20. This also seems to be backed up by the gain reduction LEDS, more light up with 4:1 ratio than a 20:1 ratio. This all seems to be backwards to what I expected with a compressor. Is it just me or is this pedal not working as correctly?

IIRC, the sensitivity increases (as in the level at which it starts compressing goes down) as the ratio comes down.
If you adjust the input knob so that the LEDs start lighting at the same playing volume but you get more compression from playing harder at a higher ratio, all is well.
I think.

Good to know. I will have a play with the input when I change ratios.

the input knob is very sensitive, a tiny increment makes a big difference, the only thing I don't like about it. Especially trying to balance volumes on P and J basses, a boost pedal before it would be better
