New P.A. What's hot what's not?

Post by dagwood dawg » 11 Jun 2018, 19:51

Seeking some advice

The band I'm with has been using a Mackie 808 but we need to replace it. Any suggestions welcome.

We are considering a straight replacement but are we missing out on modern tech by doing so?

F.o.h and monitors are all powered btw

Cheers

Shaun

Look at the soundcraft, Behringer/Midas digital mixers. All remote controlled by phone/tablet. Built in effects included.

Yep - I use a Soundcraft UI16 with my band......it is insanely easy to use - FX, compressor/limiter & EQ on every channel (inc the 6 Aux's which also have feedback suppression). Mains out have the same. Fits in a shallow 4U rack and each member can control their foldback/IEM with me running the 'master control' from my tablet. Having the ability to save the 'shows' makes for quick setup at your regular venues or rehearsals. Not having to lug and setup another rack full of signal processors is great! We had the behringer x-air for a while, was ok, was a pain in the ass using an iPad in places that had free wi-fi as it'd constantly interfere and I couldn't control it anymore, id have to close the app then reconnect.

We use a DL1608 at church. Because we hire a hall, we're loading in and out every week. As for getting used to it, I think there's a learning curve, but there are literally so many cool things going on with it, it's hard to pass up. One thing to be aware of is the need for a LAN is you want to use it wirelessly. Other thing being, you have to have an ipad to use it, not an android tablet.

I'd say you need at least one nerd in your band to get the best out of it. But then that might be the same for most good desks.

The wifi issue is solved by having a router attached to the mixer so it overides the hotspot feature - scan the local environment with an app like wifi analyser and choose a channel with no traffic. The other option is to go direct with an ethernet cable into a laptop but I haven't encountered a space where that was required yet. The router has donr the job.

Plenty to go on with here. Thank you Ozbass!

Heaths experience was what made me wary of current tech. Thanks BigDaddy and Slowlearner for sharing your wisdom.

we just picked up an Allen & Heath SQ5 - nice, tidy, intuitive little desk. Steep learning curve after the analog yamaha desk we were using, but we're getting there! Very impressed with it so far. Didn't take long to get a good sound up and running, but still feel like we've only just scratched the surface of what it can do

Works with Android as well as iOs for phone/tablet mixing, but external router is a must

Sure is ... We were looking at the Soundcraft and the Behringer, but our keyboard player has more money than sense and splashed out before we could stop him!
