Compressor Pedals?

Post by thedudeabides » 27 May 2018, 09:30

Compressors in pedal form, what are you guys using? I’m interested in grabbing one to gig with, but quiet enough to record through as well. Any advice appreciated.
Cheers.

Schalltecknik Pumpernickle. Very transparent - basically a studio comp in a pedal. It's a DIY solution though :-)

Cali76 CB (Compact Bass)

I don't think I'll buy another compressor.

Trawl here to make a short list. I’ve been going though compressor pedals over the last year so I’ve got a small stockpile I need to move on.

I have an Origin Effects Cali76 Compact Bass.
Would like to try an OVNIFX Smoothie Opto compressor.

There are some great compressors out there including in the pedal format. I don't have any pedals apart from a Wah, but with regards to compressors, i have a rack mounted Rane DC24 which i think is great - something you could look at if you ever considered rack gear - which is a dual band compressor so that you can compress the lows and the highs separately + it comes with a noise gate and limiter. If money was no object, i would go with the Empirical Labs Distressor EL8x (also a rack mounted compressor) - something that i am trying to find to buy on the second-hand market. Otherwise i too recommend the http://www.ovnilab.com/ site for great reviews / advice on compressors for bass guitar

I was about to start listing the ones I've tried but easier to divide into two camps. Transparent or not. If you pick one I can give some suggestions of ones I've spent time with.

+2 for Onvilab.
I only hear great things about the MXR with the biggest gripes being that the knobs are hard to adjust for dudes with bigger digits. I've never used one myself.

I can confidently recommend the Boss LMB3 for live and the Keeley Bassist for live AND recording :-)

The Zoom B3 and B3n units also had several very cool compressor options but I found the B3 and B3n dont do "subtle" :-)
