Tweeter Swap Aguilar DB112

Post by stonecoldbass » 15 Apr 2018, 16:07

Hey all!
I have a question:
Has anyone on here ever replaced/swapped out the tweeter in their Aguilar DB112 or GS112 cabinets? I currently have these boxes but find the tweeter sounds quite 'plasticy' and would like to replace it for something more akin to what I have in my Epifani cabs (not really sure what these are exactly...)
So just wondering if anyone could give some advice on this procedure and tweeter recommendations!
Thanks!
Craig

If you do it the right way, there's no reason why I can't be done. First thing you'd need to do is figure out which tweeter Epifani used in whatever cab's you've got. Then you need to figure out if it has the same nominal impedance as the tweeter you want to replace. If it has, we are still in business because it means you can keep the existing crossover. If it has a different impedance, you'll have to replace the tweeter AND the crossover.

* Carvin B1500, Epifani PS1000, Ashdown Superfly amps.

Heres a datasheet:

But does the Aguilar have an L-pad? ie tweeter attenuator. Turning this down may help.
I also saw that Epifani used an Audiotek KHS (quick look found no datasheet) - but changed it to a Paudio(!) if I'm reading right. Try L-pad or doubling the resistor size first?
I see..............basses!

Not necessarily. To get the same result you'd have to use a crossover with exactly the same topology. If one is, for instance, 2nd order/2nd order and the other is 2nd order/4th order they'll sound very different. And if the very terms 2nd order/2nd order are as foreign to you as the Odyssey written in its original language you're best off not attempting a tweeter swap. IMO if you like the sound of Epifani and not that of Aguilar sell the Aguilar and get more Epifani.
