Amp Suggestions

Post by TBGibbo » 01 Feb 2018, 13:38

I am looking at getting a new amp to replace my old Fender Rumble 60w
Budget up to $1200 Aus

I am open to a combo or head/cab set up

Want 250 to 500 watts

Play varied from pink Floyd, blues, classic rock.
Like smooth rounded deep tone
Play mainly with a pick (I know - Im working on my fingers - after many years on guitar!!!)
Plat a real Bird - so passive input
For home practice and Garage rehearsal and possibly small shows

Ideally would like the option to plug in an additional Cab if I go the combo

Ones on my list are:

Ashdown Rootmaster 500w 2 x10 Combo
Ashdown Rootmaster 500w 1x15 Combo
TC Electronics 250w 2x10 Combo
TC electronics 350w 1x15 Combo
TC electronics BH550 head - 2x12 Cab (a bit out my price range)
Hartke 500 210 Combo or 1x15
Ampeg BA210

Any thoughts on these or a different setup.
Leaning toward the rootmaster (love the name!!!!!) but so many conflicting reports Im going round in circles

Combos do limit flexibility. You can get some very good second hand deals here if you look.
Will play for food.

You get great value for money with Ashdown and great tone.

I'm a fan of combos (for me) but wouldn't recommend it for you. It looks like you're in a position where you might want to experiment with a few different amp/cab combinations so flexibility would be good.

If a Mesa Walkabout pops up buy it. GK Fusion or Orange lunchbox would be worth a look too..

There's an Ashdown 210 cab in the classifieds (just listed):

I would also recommend second hand - it still seems to be a buyer's market which means you can get good gear for (very) reasonable money.

Where are you located?

Another vote for second hand - for the same budget you'll get something twice as good. A brand name head with a quality 212 or 210 cab should be able to be found within your $1200 budget

Some example just from looking at the classifieds on this forum (and there is always eBay, Gumtree and Facebook to look at too) -

full Hartke rig, near new - $1300 http://ozbassforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=23161

or this https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/rosevil ... 1173679455,
insanely lightweight rig and great from pratice to rehearsal and got 500 more to spend.
FYI a brand new GK cx210 costs about 600ish from guitar factory parramatta.

I wanted a light weight rig 4 regular gigging as opposed too my big 10unit rack.

I bought a darkglass m900 to give it ago 2nd hand off this forum.

Man its great. Its a ashame there aren't many demos showing its versatility. Most go for the darkglass dirt.

But I mainly use it clean and stomp in its vintage od on a few songs for a bit of grit and i love it.

Light and powerful. I seen a m500 on here 2nd and would recommend it. Although extra bucks 4 a cab. But u get a bit of play in sound via cab choice.

Btw i went a m900 for light weight and size but i now lug an eden 610 because it thumbs together

Welcome to the forum TBGibbo.

As has been pointed out, you can get some great deals in the classified here. I also recommend 2nd hand if possible, as you can try things and usually get your money back (or very close to it) if you find it's not what you want. We all have different tastes and what one person loves, somebody else won't like much; which is why some of the gear seem to move around this forum until finding the person who loves it.

What do you like/dislike about your Rumble 60 (apart from wanting more power)?

If you are buying new, in recommend trying the Fender Rumble series. I have tried a few recently and thought they were fantastic. They are quite versatile as well.

I guess I sort of agree with this re combos. A combo and an extension cab is super flexible though. Small gigs/rehearsals you take your combo in one hand and you're on your way. Need more grunt, you throw the extension cab in the car and you're good to go.

Thanks for the input guys so far. Appreciate the feedback.
The Harke Rig above looks good but the dude is in Sydney - Now if he was in Radelaide it would be worth pursuing !

Trying to find a decent Combo with ext Cab capabilities is proving difficult - new or used!

Had the opportunity to play on a mates Goldentone from the 60s and must say the sound was really nice and smooth - It did smell a bit at the end of the night though! (It doesn't get used too often) And no he won't part with it!

I had the TC 210 combo for a while - it was great. I used it in a few situations where I thought it wouldnt be loud enough but with PA support it was sweet as. It runs at 4ohm though I think to make full use of its 250 watts so it wont work with an extension cab unfortunately
