SWR Goliath III users...

Post by FunkyJase » 25 Nov 2017, 15:22

What do you think of it?
I have an opportunity to get one and thought I may grab it but maybe you guys can tell me what you think.

I need a bigger sound for some of my louder gigs that my 1210 cant justify. The worst for me would be a cab that has scooped out mids. I dont know why thats even a thing. Its that horrible smiley face eq... yuck....

So if it can bring the thunder and doesnt sound like poop, I could make room for it he..

Opinions.... go!

Oh and what about the older Fender Rumble 410s? Black ones... any good?

SWR has a rep for scooped tone but I think this is bc they started making cabs that could deliver decent bass and had good quality horns.... also that's how everyone played when they were the shiz.

I had a III for a while and loved it. Turn the horn down and eq to taste. Very capable box.

As always, let your own ears be the judge.

Funkyjase, I owned 1 for a while because they have a good rep. They are a loud cab, but I just couldn't get along with it no matter what I did. I play punk rock and love mids, and it just didn't happen with this cab. It was loud, but struggled to hear it on stage. I tried it with a variety of heads but it always had a baked in smiley face EQ and I couldn't get rid of the darn thing. I moved it on and was much happier. For some folks I'm sure its fine, but yeah for me I couldn't get a useable tone out of it

Try it without the horn. I had a Swr Goliath Jr III modular rig. Still got a 2x10 and eyes peeled for a second.

I had an Aggie DB 212 and didn't like the mid bump. I liked the cabs tone with dirt but the clean tone was not for me YMMV

I'm not convinced that SWR's cabs are particularly scoopy, although if you have any quad on the floor and you're standing too close you might get this impression as the mids have to be pretty directional from any 410, but the tweeters tend to throw more widely and so do true lows. I've always found that it's SWR's amps that have a "baked-in smiley face".

I played yesterday with two golight 410s. They're slightly more high-mid happy than the earlier Goliaths, but it was a great full range sound.

:p It already has wheels. Just have your guitar players lift it out of the car for you. ;)

SWR? There's only one cab to consider ... the Henry 8x8. Best rock cab ever.

Ha well to be honest I really just need a cab that's gonna compete with the guitarist and have good excursion, nice mids and can be driven hard... Cheap would be good too - Budget of around $450/500

Im borrowing a mates old Sovtek 410 for the next gig just to see how fussy I have to be :-)
