Noble Bass Pre Amp DI Vid

Post by Steve-o » 26 Mar 2016, 15:05

Around 6 months ago i took the plunge and bought Noble's Pre Amp DI box, I had seen it floating around different avenues on the net and knew i had to try one out. I spoke to Jack at Noble and managed to get a great deal and realised this could be the first unit to make to Australia. I've gigged / recorded with it ever since, when twinned with a Pbass it really sings and gives you so much more tone and presence.

Last week i was sitting down with it and thought I should do a quick A/B test, heres the vid.

Yeah....the sound with the DI is miles better than going direct to the PC. Chalk and cheese....Excellent playing too

My favorite bass preamp for recording to date has been the Monique (on loan from Basshack). It's a bit too pricey for me but I'd love to be able to compare the Noble to the Monique for recording. Still looking for that affordable "special sauce" when it comes to recording bass

:hmm Where abouts in Melbourne are you Steve-o? Anywhere near Mulgrave? :hmm

Cheers! The Monique is another pre I'd love to try, I'm in St Kilda East mate.

I'm so surprised no one in Australia makes something like this. It would most definitely be a big seller :yep

Without sounding disrespectful, what we're talking about is a really good fender style EQ and DI all wrapped up together. Right?

It's pretty hard to build anything like that in numbers here and cover your costs. Tim Evans at labsystems had a red hot go with amps but gave up. There is one guy i know who could get close but it wouldn't be cheap.

I like what I hear on the P bass demo.

Bass & treble boost only, like the Sadiwsky preamp. Different tonal goal though.

Switchable HPF fixed at 150Hz, I wonder how that sounds in a mix? Why 150Hz for a bass DI anyway?

The unit is far from cheap anyway......around USD 900. Add exchange differences and freight and its getting right up there. Thats why I'm surprised noone in Australia is making something similar........with maybe a lower frequency on the HPF and a line throught that is switchable pre and post eq.

Building boutique tube amps is a lot harder than boutique basses... And they don't look as shiny or impressive. I looked into building tube amps a few years back. It's pretty hard to do well. How many would actually sell here even at $500/unit?

I love that bassist are so used to DIs now a boutique market exists, the bass player from some country band on premier guitar seemed to really like it.
Originally this was where all the people I've sold/gotten gear from that went well, but I haven't met a bad person yet :D

Thanks to giggawazza for the Bongo.

Pretty sweet sounds, I've been checking these out.

I also like that the thru is coloured by the EQ and tubes rather than bypassed. You may ask why I'd need that running 4 tube amps... but hey, can you have too much tube?

Tim Lefebvre talks about how he uses the cut on the Noble here:

Can anyone point me to a gut's shot of the pre ?

One of these into a TecAmp, Glock or Demeter 300W all valve power amp should be like

I know I am going to get flamed but I prefer the sound of the 1st clip without the Noble. If I was an engineer tracking this bass then the 1st clip sounds more balanced to me. The mids sound much better. The Noble on those settings sounds scooped to me.

Just found a picture of the older model for sale on Reverb with the transformer mounted outside.

Do I still want one ? Convince me it's good for metal.
