The white JB4 is really tempting...just can't quite justify it's purchase...but my subconscious is working overtime to correct that :)

Tell your subconscious that a bass needs 5 strings. It worked for me. Otherwise I might have one by now.

Interesting thread..i remember seeing these basses in a music shop in Adelaide back in the day and they always looked like well made basses..if anyone is interested here is a youtube clip of Sydney rock band Avion with bass player Kendall Waller playing a Matio JB 4..apparently he played it on all recordings the band made...''Avion'' and ''White noise'' lps

Thanks for sharing that, Leslie. I used to have one of them around that time, and it had an uncanny ability to never miss a beat. Kendall's one had the same trick: at around 2:30 in the clip a girl runs onstage to give him a quick hug and that dang old JB4 keeps playing almost by itself. Magic, I tells ya!
Eleven. Exactly. One louder.

Oh well, my subconcious one. One white JB4 on layby. Oh well, the other JB4 needed a brother anyway :) Will post a pic once I have it.

(Zombie alert!)

So - who knows why the JB4 is currently out of production again?

"PLEASE NOTE: This guitar is currently unavailable, stay tuned for exciting developments across the range of Maton electrics."

Maybe outsourcing to China?

There must be something special about these basses that I'm not aware of, but the aesthetics don't appeal to me

When I owned one, long ago, it sang. It "just worked". Playing it felt like coming home.

Then I moved to 5-string, and I have other nice basses now. Still, I do kinda miss it.
