I can not adjust the bridge pickup height in my squier.

Post by grooveinsyd » 18 Jul 2018, 21:39

As the title says, there is nothing under the bridge pickup in my squier pj, no foam, no spring.

I pick it up second hand and never owned a squier before, is it normal? Any other DIY way to fix it?

Thanks in advance. Pic for attention.

Stick some foam in there. Doesn’t have to be Fender branded foam, lots of different options. As long as it is dense and stiff enough to hold the pickup at the height you adjust it will do the job.

Knobs: Mesa, MarkBass, Fender
Patch: TC Electronic, Aguilar, too many to list

Not normal. My Squiers have either had foam, or foam and springs.

That's good to know I guess ?! At least I know it not a design flaw

I mean sure it will probably work. Thick cut and dense weather seal foam is usually the go to.

I've been using hot water pipe insulation foam with OK results. It does settle eventually and I generally put another piece in at that time.

That is much better choice than sponge.

They seem cost more than weather seals.

If you have a specialist rubber supplier, you can get self-adhesive foam neoprene strips.
Ebay has stuff like

you can cut up
I see..............basses!

I know Eddie Van Halen used to screw the pickup straight to the body on his Strat, saying it sounded better. Makes a certain amount of sense, with a one pickup instrument. Especially if there is any microphonics in the pickup.

If you have a Clark Rubber store nearby they have an offcuts bin where you can pick up some high density foam pretty cheaply

I've had that mod done on one of my P basses - installed a block of mahogany under the P pickup equal to the ideal PU height. Gives it more bottom end - that bass is nicknamed 'The Freight Train'.

I could see that being done for a bridge PU in a PJ that needs more oomph.

How does your current PU sound to YOUR ears?
Is the PU height correct?

I'll give it go during weekend, only concern is cut those high density rubber to fit might not as easy as those weather seal.
