Single coil hum in sandberg tm?

Post by grooveinsyd » 24 May 2018, 23:14

So today I went to a local music store to try out a sandberg tm4.
Then I find out:
1. when I blend to neck pickup, there is no single coil hum. Does anyone know what kind of delano pickup is that?
2. when I switch bridge pickup in single coil mode, there is a single coil hum no mater is bridge pickup full on or blend in between. Anyone got experience on this? Is this happening to your tm? Or there is something wrong with the one I was trying?

Sounds like something wrong, I would expect the other way around with hum on the neck pickup? Weird.

If the neck is a double coil (or other magic) noiseless, it won’t cancel out the bridge’s single coil hum because it won’t have the hum itself.

Did you expect it would cancel the hum like a classic jazz.

The bridge is a humbucker! It definitely should not hum.

Even in single coil mode? It becomes a single coil pickup doesn't it? That's why some Musicman models have the phantom coil underneath. It gives you a hum free experience in single coil mode.

So no matter a single coil parallel or series with other humbucker(double coil), it won't cancel out the hum?
I did not know that. Lessons learned

Sorry about the confusion, I mean when I switch the bridge humbucker to single coil mode in situation 2

I have a bass wired with a series/parallel switch. Neither setting produces any hum. Gives you the SC-like tone without the heartache.

Is it everywhere or just in particular rooms? I used to rehearse in a room with lots of low flouro lights that made my single coil pickup hum. It was fine in other venues

Yup. You'll need them to both pick up the same hum and be delivering it in the opposite direction to get cancellation. If either fails, you might get /some/ cancellation, but it won't be great.

Ah drat I forgot about the single coil switch for the humbucker. So yes packrat is correct it's a matter of them both picking up the hum and in opposite 'directions' to cancel out. Depends how the single coil it's using is wired, I'm clearly not an expert

My guess is the neck pickup is hum cancelling, which means the bridge in single coil will hum (unless it's got a phantom coil or is actually a humbucker itself in jazz configuration, like the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups).
