Well, as that great Supernaut song says, I LIKE IT BOTH WAYS, and you do.
That's a GOOD thing. Believe me.

hehe I was singing that song to myself

it's a damn shame I like both, coz now I need a P bass with flats, and one with rounds, same with my jazz basses, lucky I have 2 of each hehe

Just been playing my P with flats that's for sale. Think I'm just going to withdraw it. They do sound great. I will always record with rounds though. The attack on the front of the note is crucial with recording.. you can soften it if needed, but you can't put it in if it's missing.

I've always found that flats record better for me. They seem to add a natural balance to the dynamics so i rarely use a lot of compression. I have a pretty light touch too.
I agree for certain styles that they lack a bit of attack and articulation but that's why i always bring a bass with both to sessions.
Live playing on the other hand, I prefer flats for just about everything...

I should've clarified why I think I prefer flats when recording. Because we have one sometimes two acoustic guitars in the song, flats sound a bit closer to an upight bass's sound and seems to mix better with them.

Flats are great for recording if you have a lazy left hand technique like myself...no string noise.

Prob goes without saying, but be prepared to do some adjustment to the neck relief if you're going to throw flats on. Most flatwounds will pull the neck up, except for TI's. Chromes are pretty close in tension to Rotosound RW's from experience.

I’ve been scouring the whole net for quite some time for a video review of the 5-string TI flats, alas... nothing. Since I was really keen to try it, I took a leap of fate and brought it last night when I saw one going cheap (84ish after Paypal conversion from green bucks). Just saying :D

Picked up a set of TI flats delivered Fedex from South America less than $70 AUD ,that’s a little less than staff price at the shop. Will check out the gauge on the 5 string set

FWIW, I almost always use a round wound B string with EADG strings flats. I've never found a flat wound B string to my liking.
So, it's an older round wound B string and either Chromes, EB Cobalts or TI flats on my 5s.
Works 4 me live and recording

I have a set of flats as thick as my small finder, with a brass bar at the end, probably from the 5Os,one day will try them on my J.Used them on a 61j recording once, they sounded huge
