Maton MGB4 rediscovery (Video Content)

Post by Classic5 » 25 Apr 2018, 12:12

After the recent talk about Maton basses here on the forum I decided to dust off my old Maton MGB4 bass and give it a play. I still remember the day I purchased it from a local music store back in 1986, like it was yesterday. Australian made, set neck design and weighing a nice 3.90kg. 100% original, It’s active/passive with a sassafras body and maple top. It has the densest African ebony fretboard you’ll see – absolutely beautiful. Five piece rock maple neck with ebony stringers.

For this recording the bass was in passive mode using only the front pickup. The bass has been tucked away for at least a couple of years and I haven’t changed the strings for ages, yet it was still in tune. Given it’s Anzac day, I thought I’d have a go at this Cold Chisel classic written by Don Walker in 1978. The bass is being played to a bass-less backing track – so what you hear is purely the Maton. It plays beautifully and sounds terrific.

Hey Jeremy, yes it's through the U5 into my interface, using setting 3 on the U5. I'm still experimenting with different ways to record the bass, but the U5 is the best option I have at the moment. I think it sounds quite good with this bass......not sterile at all IMO which is what some tend to complain about with the U5. I'd love to try a Reddi though........maybe one day.

Thanks Guys. And Blaine, yes there are a couple of things that haven't been revealed yet, but nothing to get too excited about

This one has been with me for 34 years though. Just been a bit neglected.

Great job - sounds great. Even though the vocalist on the track sounds more like Jagger than Barnesy LOL

Yeah I know. I could have used the original track but then the bass would be clashing with the original. It's pretty hard to match Jimmy Barnes on vocals that's for sure.
