Blind test: MusicMan StingRay 2004 vs Cort GB75JH

Post by Petebass » 21 Jan 2018, 19:23

Here's one for the Stingrays fans. This appeared elsewhere on the interwebs so it's not me playing on the recordings.

Can you tell which bass is being played on which take?

For the record, the Stingrays 5 was recorded with on board eq set flat. The Cort was recorded in passive mode using the humbucker only. It has a single coil neck pickup as well, but it wasn't used on the recording. Both basses used identical strings.

Post your answers below and let's see how we all go. And don't cheat by going looking for the answer online.

* 2 Stingray 5's (one heavily modded), Ibanez SR805, Ashbory, + more...
* Carvin B1500, Epifani PS1000, Ashdown Superfly amps.
* Lots of DIY neo/lightweight cabs including one made from composites http://www.ozbassforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2546

I think the MM is second and the Cort first.

Any chance you can describe what you're hearing?

The first one seems to be rounder and quite pronounced in the upper mids. The lows are also getting lost in the track. The second one is more balanced, has a fuller low end and seems slightly more aggressive.

So am I completely wrong?

I own both (Cort GB5, which I believe is the previous version). Plus I have a J on my Stingray. They both sound good to me. The MM Pickups are the main difference from what I can tell. The SD pickup is brighter than the Musicman one.
Will play for food.

The second feels more like the bark of .a stingray, I don't get that same sense from #1 which has some unusual shapes, but not SRish.

The 2nd sounds like a SR5 to me. It sounds like an active bass compared to a passive in the 1st take.

I would also guess the 2nd is the MM

I've been curious about that thread. I reckon my stingray SR5 can do both those tones... I hear parallel setting on the first and series on the second...

ps. I have a ceramic SR5 too, the alnico is very different too....

True. My recent HH is pretty versatile but an older simple Ray sounds a lot more like 2.

Interested to know the answer. I have no idea. Sold my SR5 a long time ago. Won't buy another one, but they both sound awesome in that.

Are the MM pickups in the same position? It's hard to tell from the photo, but the Cort pickup looks to be closer to the bridge, which is what the first clip sounds like to me.

I agree with you, Greg, the Cost has the bucker more in the position you see in a Sandberg - much closer to the bridge which gives less of a Sting and more of a Jazz.

Damn you guys are good. Over on TB, this went on for 9 pages with votes split very evenly. Then a flame war erupted over Stingray 2 Vs 3Band eq :)

Eventually the results were revealed and there were more than a few very red faces.

You all nailed it.

* No 1 is the Cort
* No 2 is the Stingray.

But I'll tell you what, decent Stingray impersonations are few and far between. IMO, this is a beauty, with the pickup position the only giveaway as to which is which. Yes it's a tad too close to the bridge, but it somehow doesn't sound like a bridge pick up like the Sandberg, MTD Kingston, and many others.

And when you consider the price difference, plus the fact the Cort has a J neck pickup, I'm was pretty tempted to track one down.

Then I found out it had a 19mm string spacing, compared to 17mm on the SR5. I've gotten rid of otherwise decent basses in the past because my little hands just can't deal with 19mm spacing.......

Do Cort offer a 4 string version Pete that does the same sound? After hearing this, I'm tempted if there is a 4 available
