Something second-hand in Spector might also hit this for you, and they're a little more likely to have a 35" scale which might neaten up your B string. I recently picked up an NS-95 for well under $1k.

I don't have a lot of experience with Ps (well, what a surprise) but the Q I built (with the two reverse P-style pickups) is perfectly balanced, B string to G string. The reverse mount adds "bottom end" to the higher strings and "top end" to the lower strings - voila.

I just bought an Ibanez SR655. I Only bought it as a Backup to my SRFF805.

Image

I **** LOVE it.

Light, thin, ultra fast neck, warmth, punch, massive tonal ability. The EQ is great (active and passive), and I picked this up for $1400 New.

The B is clear as a bell, even with P pickups. And i own a couple of 35" 5 strings, and this is just as good. All of my basses are tuned in either drop B or A# Standard, so low string clarity it pretty important to me. And im using the stock set of strings, with a .130 B. Normally i have EBPS's with a .135 B.

I prefer it to the SRFF805 i think. The bartolini's in the 805 are nice, but the nordstrands sound better than they have any right to haha.

@drbass thanks for that little titbit, it got me doing some more research - and there's a lot of positive information about the results with the reverse mount P. This thread in particular has some detailed user accounts:

@Ben B - I'm sure it was purely coincidental posting that directly after Michael, but did you notice the orientation of your P pickup in that pic?

I think I've got myself a base requirement set now at least. I'm planning a mid-life crisis build session in a couple of years at the MSGM, but I'm thinking I might try and pull a bitza together from parts in the meantime.

If I go with a pick guard covered route on the body I should be able to orient the pickup however I like just by changing the guard...

Thanks a lot for getting the cogs going guys 😀

No, was a coincidence, didnt actually see his post until after id posted mine.

Its also another good feature if the SR655. Theres a model above it, now discontinued, called the SR755, that has the same pickups in the same configuration, but just different body woods. Also another one worth tracking down.

Interesting thread. There's one post that describes what I'm doing with my current build: a humbucker in the exact Stingray position, and a reverse P as close to the original centre of the P as possible. I hope to finish that one reasonably soon (see Future builds thread).

I've played one in the local music shop a while back, pretty nice, they sold all their stock of these really quick.

I played the 4 string 700 series BB in-store today. Great bass... but yet again the 5ers has already sold out! I’m a big 1+ on the 1025x on eBay - so hard to come by, such a great bass and $900 is an awesome price for a new BB 1000 series! Buy it you won’t regret it... Classic5 has two 1024xs...

I'm still not sure which one was being referred to? There was one on ebay that was $1K but would've got to $900 with the ebay boxing day code.

At the moment I'm seriously considering dual neck (fretted/fretless) options at this stage, which is easier done with fender gear...

Looks like I've got my path...

I won a cheap MIM 5 string jazz on ebay last night. I'll be heading to Melbourne early March and planning to stop in at MSGM for a few hours, so I'll discuss/do routing under the pick guard and cutting a new guard with a reverse p mount. All (cosmetically) reversible if the experiment doesn't work out as I hope...

I like the Jazz body shape and neck, so I'm hoping this ends up being a solid player :)
