Ok, who has the oldest five string?

Post by lownotes42 » 06 May 2017, 19:53

Ok, just for fun, and because I love 5 string basses, who has the oldest 5 string? Show me or tell me about your 80s and 90s fivers!

Probably not the oldest but likely to be one of the more exotic ones.

'92 Sandberg Classic S2, mahogany body, what looks like a maple contrast layer, and a koa top. Neck through. Amazing bass, out there B string for a 34" scale.

Haven't played Sandi live for quite some time now (have others I prefer), and probably won't play it live ever again since I have sigs of Holger Stonjek (owner of Sandberg)

and Ida Nielsen on the back:

Anyway ...

Michael

My Stingray-Precision hybrid is based on a 1990 Stingray 5 ..... But you've seen enough pics of it by now.

This is a 70's bass converted by the original maker to 5 string in the earlier 90's

In the spirit of this thread I give you me at 16 and a half years old in early 1992 and obviously feeling a bit under the weather.

In xmas 91 my parents bought me this bass from southern music in Adelaide.

It was second hand.

What a second hand Cort 5 string was doing in the south of Adelaide in '91 I have no idea.

I also have no idea what happened to that bass...

I hope you can see the pic. I'm on my iPad so can't use the usual imbedded pic.

Have you considered putting some clear finish on the back only, to preserve the sigs, so you can continue playing it all the same?

Nope, Sandi is pretty much retired, just like my '90 Warwick Thumb ...

Well, I did own two 5 string basses in the late 80's - Firstly an Ibanez SR05 in an awesome frosted mint green colour. It was stolen unfortunately so I replaced it with an Ibanez SR808 in Trans Dark Green. Both were excellent basses for the money. But I don't own either of them any more.

Yamaha TRB 5P from '91 - I also had the first RBX5 model (white '88 or '89) that unbelievably came up on gumtree 2 weeks ago but sold before I could see it; I'd sanded the neck back to a raw finish. I traded it at the Rock Shop in Adelaide for an SR5 that was late '80's.
