FS: new La Bella 760FX stainless flatwound strings

Postby Aussie Mark on 30 Jul 2010, 21:55

Brand new, never used Labella long scale light gauge (.039-.096) stainless flats in original packaging.

$45 including Australia wide postage. Best price you'll find online for these strings is around AUD$60 on eBay including postage ( http://shop.ebay.com.au/?_from=R40&_trk ... _nkw=760fx ).

Here's a review of this set that I found online ....

http://www.bgra.net/2004/review.php?id=129&type=string

"These strings are loud. On my very loud bass, acoustically they sounded twice as loud as a J that was strung up yesterday with RS66. They are crystal clear. This is anything but a "thuddy" flat. The pitch is solid and definite all the way down the E string. They are wonderfully matched across the set in timbre, volume, and feel. They have a wonderfully liquid "sproing," the kind that makes for superior low P grunt."

"They're flats, but they sound very different from other flats I've played (including Thomastik-Infeld JF344s, which are themselves very different from typical flats). Because the fundamental is so strong and the highs are so good, these sound much less middy than, say the super-warm Pyramid Gold nickel flats. The LaBellas sound deep and spacious, alive and smoothly bright with no harshness. It's a sound all its own."

"the player with only one bass can string up this flat and cover more ground with it than any other flat, maybe any other string. "

If you've never tried flats before you would be better going a bit lighter because of the higher tension compared with rounds.

I've only used the Fender SS flats & Chromes - how do they compare to those?

I don't know, I've never used them before. I bought them to try some time as an alternative to my default TI Flats, but can't bring myself to take the TIs off any of the basses that are wearing them, because they sound so good. The reviewer seems to like the La Bellas, so I imagine they are good strings.

Based on what the review says, the La Bellas are lower tension like the TIs - in other words quite softer than the Chromes, and nowhere near as tight as the Fenders. Whether you would like them I guess would depend on whether you prefer high tension or low tension strings. For finger playing the low tension flats are very expressive. I like Chromes as well, but I tend to keep these on basses that I use in higher volume rock situations where I have to tug the f**k out of the strings to keep up with the rest of the band.

Do ya think the light G string (.039) could handle a high C tuning?

I can't help you there, not my department. As I said, I've never used these strings.

Found some discussion on this set at TalkBass though ....
