Buying a secondhand bass from a private seller in the UK - Rosewood neck

Post by sheeny » 05 Jul 2017, 07:56

Hi all,

Will I have any issues regarding the new CITE regulations if I am purchasing a second hand bass from a private seller in the UK if the bass has a Rosewood neck?

Any advice would be helpful.

Cheers!

A bandmate has had issues with this lately when buying two different guitars, and said it was a real pain in the ass.

If it were me, I'd steer clear.

Looks like the seller in the UK will need to get a CITES pre-Convention certificate which he ships with the bass. If he gets this and sends the bass with it, there will not be an issue.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/cites-imports-and-exports <= info there, including what it'll potentially cost.

It is laborious. I think a decent division would be that the sender does the legwork and the buyer pays the fee.
Either way, it's another $150 on the price of a Bass.

I'm very glad I got mine before the Rosewood addition.

You and me both! But you are correct, it explicitly states that shipments < 10kg which are non-commercial are not subject to the restrictions. So it should be fine for a personal import of a bass

Hi guys, reviving this thread to see if anyone can clarify the situation re: importing a second hand guitar with a rosewood fretboard. I've read few different threads but I'm still a bit confused. Asking specifically re: importing a Gibson Les Paul from a Japanese seller into Australia. Thanks in advance

U r assuming the person confiscating the item has read the fine line about the 10kg. I heard from a friend hand carry thru airport is ok. U said it right about confusion - the customs may get confused themselves what is deemed a non-commercial import. May not be the actual qty. eg $250k Ritter bass. Btw, this discussion thread needs to b moved elsewhere ...
