6 String Fretless DCO - #023

Post by Phil » 12 Aug 2012, 19:18

Woodwork: Multilaminated Maple/Wenge 7 ply set neck, Gaboon Ebony fingerboard, Mahogany body core with a Redwood burl top and back separated by layers of Wenge veneer in between top/back and core, redwood matching headstock plate

Electronics: This one will have 2 dual coil Jazz pickups made by me, wooden covers with exposed poles, 2-band preamp also a piezo pickup with its own 2-band preamp too.

Bought a block of Redwood burl which I had resawn, the result was 5 plates, 4 used for the two bookmatched top and back and the spare one for the headstock and electronics cover.

The tenon has be cut flush

Lining up the top with the body core to cut the neck pocket in it, the top is pinned down to prevent any movement, in this case with 4 alnico magnets I had lying around

The lines where to cut have been marked on the top

It fits! :drinkingbuddies:

That's it for today :)

Man, everything is just so clean in there - I always have so many things on the go, my workbench is an utter disaster.

Looking forward to seeing that burl pop with some finish on it!

Thanks :)

Chris, you're just lucky I cleaned up the workshop before taking pics, that's usually done like once a month :D

It's good to see another DCO on the go. I know that the Jazzes have been wildly popular, but I also know you want to be making more of these if you can. That top is going to look spectacular.

Are your pickups going to be jazz style or a wider aperture?

The pickups are dual coil Jazz, side by side, with coil switches too, series, paralell, single coil, everything but the kitchen sink baby!

If one _does_ go for the kitchen sink option, can you get it in ceramic?

Hi Phil, Looks really nice as always.

Ivan and I had a look in the back of Evri's custom Warwick on Saturday night. He had individual volume controls for each of the string piezo pickups. Nudge nudge....

Update on this one, the pickups will be made by me and we've got Ebony covers with them, pics of the cover below,

Image
Image

I sprayed base coats of lacquer on the body then cut the pickup routs and the piezo wiring access from under the bridge

Image

lacquer is done, bass should be good to go in a couple of weeks

I don't play 6, but I'd give this a go
Basses: Wasburn Status 4, Fretless 4 made from parts, Fretted through neck 5 made by me
Amp: Eminar bass 400 into home made cab with JBL 15"
