Black seems to work better with a vintage amber tint on the neck.... not trying to hijack Phil's thread about the sale of this instrument though..

To me it seems most custom colour maple neck basses have blocks in the fingerboard to give contrast, or they have black hardware to give a strong contrast.

The orange works for me. I think i prefer the bass below to any of the custom colours, given the plain neck being offered.

Hey Mark,

That G&L is awesome! I was trying to find a pic of a yellow bass with a matching headstock on a maple neck, but couldn't find one. Is the bridge on that thing chrome or black? I can't tell.

Phil would hate me (if he doesn't anyway) as I would want a Nordstrand active/passive preamp, rather than the offered Aggie - easy enough for me to source and supply.

I am the only one that doesnt like Jazz control plates with no pickguard ?
It just looks so 'I've removed the pick guard'
I think its mostly the shape of the control plate is meant to go with the pick guard, maybe another shape contorl plate would look ok, or no control plate ?

sorry for the de-rail :)

Hey Phil,

Which of your two photos shows the real colour of the fingerboard?

Also, is this meant to be a 4 knob, side jack instrument (ie is the body drilled that way), or are you intending the output jack to be on the chrome control plate?

lots of the strats of the 50's had maple boards and the classic colours which makes them easier to picture

Hey Andy,

I understand why the Strats work, and the neck tint and non-matching headstock work well with them. It's an iconic look for a guitar.

This is a whole different kettle of fish. Different body shape, control and pickup colour and configuration. How many Jazz basses have you seen in a custom colour with white pickup covers and knobs like the images above? Try finding a custom colour Fender-ish bass with a matching headstock and a plain maple neck.

From an aesthetic perspective, custom coloured basses seem to be tarted up twith blocks, inlays or use figured maple rather than plain. It's really the plain fingerboard I'm struggling with. I love Phil's headstock and logo and his work is obviously world-class, but the neck/fingerboard on this isn't working for me. I really don't like maple necks, unless tinted, aged or figured or all of these :ninja: Just my preference.

I'm sure Phil could paint this any colour he wishes and have lots of buyers lined up.

Andy

PS: The Burg Mist Lull 5er that BP are offering also has a tinted/birdseye board...

heh, the orange Lull is the same one I posted, but with a different pickguard - it rocks with the black hardware and the white guard... :-)
