Hi Phil,

Looks like I've found where I'm going to get my next bass from!

Love modern Jazz bass with vintage vibes from Terry's #014 especially!

Have you done any fretless PJ basses before? Is there a surcharge? What kind of figured tops do you usually have available?

Hi Shawn, thanks and welcome to the forum :)

I have done fretless basses before but no PJ's yet, not that i'd mind, definitely no surcharges for fretless. I don't have many tops at all available i usually buy them to order with the customer depending on the preferences for the bass, so anything goes for the top really.

I set up my Pastors lefty last week, strangest thing I have done; felt weird.
... dial in some "J" to angry it up!

Got gear but little talent!

I just edited the first post to reflect changes in the price list.

I recently started a new job that's 2 weeks on/off FIFO, that basically gives me 6 months a year of free time to build basses so I'm ready to get back into it. It's also a lot more time then I've ever had before since I was only building on week-ends. I'm offering all models I had previously again with little to no restrictions and will also make fully custom instruments again i.e. new body shape etc..

I still don't have anyone that's ordered a bass yet. That is surprising me, I remember a time when I was so stressed because I had to finish instruments because 2 or 3 were waiting in line to be started. Maybe its not such a good thing for businesses to take two years off :D

To sweeten the deal I'll offer a promotion for the MONTH of NOVEMBER. Anyone who orders a bass this month gets a free upgrade to an Hiscock hardcase, a $280 value.

For a while there you sounded a bit like you were slowing down the business Phil. You're clearly not, which is great!! The old business model worked best for you - Custom orders.

Still thinking about building an acoustic bass (like my Taki B10)? Or your own URB sounding model? That'd garner a LOT of interest.
Basses: Fender - Rob Allen - Tobias - Duesenberg

I haven't really thought about the acoustic bass for a while, it would be nice to try but honestly, I doubt I could do better than what's out there so it would pretty much be a bedroom practice thing or would need to be plugged in through a piezo pickup if you wanted to play with people.

There's quite a lot of learning to do for the acoustic bass. There's plenty of information out there for guitars but very little for acoustic basses so I'd be starting from zero. I wanted to buy a Thunderchief a few years back because it got so many good reviews and reverse-engineer the sucker but that's out of my price at the moment. Maybe some point in the future.

A bass like the takamine B10 would be a winner - I was looking for this before I bought my upright.

I had a look at the B10, never saw one before. That's much more an archtop than an ABG, the time in building one of these is just huge, there's easily 4 times more labour in an archtop than an electric. I couldn't compete with Takamine with this, it would have to go for 4k to make it worthwhile. I don't think many people would want to spend that much for an handmade bass that needs to be plugged in to be heard and that's really an issue I have with any ABG. Also, the cost for parts may be cheaper than an electric but the labour goes right up. In the end you're looking at about the same price I charge for an electric. The other issue I have is finding a case for these locally, I need to be able to ship the bass in something. I can probably get something ok from the local suppliers (although not many of them carry ABG cases) but whatever I make will need to fit inside that case so that makes the design of the instrument pretty limited, forget about trying a bigger or deeper body.
