For Sale, ready to ship; 5st Jazz Modern, 24 frets #028

Post by Phil » 21 Nov 2013, 18:59

I finished designing a 5 string modern jazz in CAD last week-end, I'll be creating the templates for them tomorrow and start the neck then. So far this project doesn't have a customer or a full scope of work, that all depends on if someone puts his hand up to buy it. The neck will likely have either Indian Rosewood or Mac Ebony fingerboard, depending on how I feel when I start it if there's no buyer :) The body is also up in the air, as is the electronics. I don't have the hardware or pickups in stock so I'll probably do most of the woodwork and wait for the last minute to order them depending on buyer preference.

Here's a pic of the templates, the design is obviously based on Maxgroover's 6 string modern jazz. Delivery date can probably be late January since I have two weeks off for Christmas to work on it. PM me for a quote or look at my price list for a general idea

Aw man, Phil! That ticks all the boxes for me.

Problem is, I can't tick the cash box. :(

Some new developments here that are going to strap me down barring a miracle

Why don't you try asking her if I can have it? I afraid to.

I'd have to give up my birthday bass dream if I got you to build the P's twin. Can't have two Jazz basses on the wall in LPB could I? But boy would it look special rolling up to a gig with a set of twins.

In fact a Jazz fretless 5 string to match the fretted would really be so sweet. No they'd have to be four basses because I'd have to have a fretless P version as well.

Ok well, the specs have been decided on a lot of the bits on this bass since I did a whole lot of woodwork in the last two days.

The MDF templates after coming out of the CNC

Macassar Ebony is it for the fingerboard

The body will have an Alder core

And an identical spalted Maple top as Maxgroover's 6 :)

And of course this is still available for sale :yep

It always amazes me to see this process documented, to see a sketch, then MDF templates and cut out peices with sharp edges etc. Then how beautiful the finished bass is.

Of course, it just helps me make accurate templates faster, I didn't start using the cnc until around bass 015 or 016, before that i made all my templates by hand

Although i've always used CAD to design my instruments, i just printed the designs on paper, glued that on the mdf and then shaped the mdf to the drawing

It looks like it is going to be a real beauty.. It is going to have a matching spalted headstock or is that too over the top ?

No matching headstock , it's a bit complicated to do that on a fender style headstock when you think that the transition from headstock to fingerboard is curved/rounded, on angled headstock its easy to do, not so on these ones
