Basshack's 5 st Lake Placid Blue P - #027

Post by Phil » 06 Jan 2013, 16:58

This was going to be originally one of my personal projects to do this year and offer for sale once done but it looks like Blaine was in a hurry to snap it up :D

I've had this 5 string Nordstrand P pickup for a couple of years in the closet waiting for when I would have a bit of free time to build an LPB 5 string P just for fun, the free time never happened until now.

Specs so far are Alder body, LPB paint/matching headstock, Hipshot hardware as usual, the NP5 pickup, white pick guard, Birdseye Maple fingerboard and MOP block inlays and binding. Here's the progress so far.

Did we decide on an Alder body? I thought it was Ash..... ;)

No only joking and we're heading for the fastest decision process to date. Phil's building, I'm liking and it's coming together nicely. It can't go wrong really I've liked, no loved, the others I've got my hands on and been waiting soooo long and just when I get the funds to play and decide what I want he shuts down. Of course I jumped on the opportunity.

Why did you stop to take photos! :bat: Get back to work! :peep:

Did you win the lottery of something Blaine.......the collection is really turning into a very serious COLLECTION.

It's gonna look real nice on that wall of yours

Great choice of hardware, woods and finish.....consider a tort guard though

I really want to have a play of this one when it's finished......it's giving me ideas

Hi Ivan,

No if I'd won the lottery I'd also be talking to Daniel.

I just traded in the Subaru and Sharon gave me half the profit from the difference between the trade in price and the private sale price so there was some incentive to haggle well.

Phil and I started talking a build back at the Sydney GTG but even back then the queue was full and he was forecasting talking a sabbatical. So with the funds I had saved till then I brought other stuff and then the car sale got me a Kala and the Fender. I figured that I'd be able to put funds together for a Maillioux later but then up comes this P and I'm putting other things non bass aside again. Wasn't I was just saying I think I've reached my limit. I think there will be a sale on here too shortly.

Oh sorry I don't like tort guards with maple. Rosewood yes but they don't sit right to me with maple. I've asked Phil to do two guards one in white and one in pearloid.

I'm sure Phil could throw in a free tort guard as well....just between buddies :drinkingbuddies:

But you're right, rosewood board screams tort guard

REALLY interested in this build. I know Phil is taking a break but I've been really hankering for a 5 string P lately

I'm sure he'll be taking orders again once he's built his projects. Man's gotta have some time off to do his thing.

Here's the long awaited pics, sorry Blaine!

I designed the pickguard in CAD and had to see if all the dimensions were ok so I cut one guard out of mdf to make sure everything lined up perfectly before trying a cut on a pick guard blank (and risk ruining a blank, which sucks rocks)

Easiest wiring I've ever had to do for a bass 8/

There it is, the one problem is that Blaine wanted a matching headstock (d'oh!) and there's problems with the LPB finish on the body so it needs refinishing, my supplier is taking forever to ship me the paint which is why poor Blaine is still waiting for his bass.

Oh Phil that's gorgeous. I'm stoked that its turned out so well and the guard just jumps off the body. Paint problems aside you'd have to be happy with how it's turned out.
