OMG!!!!! They're damn beautiful!!!!
George could you (again) explain to me the controls on the TW Metro MV5 PLEASE!! It does active/passive & has a tone control in Passive is that correct? I'm really just drooling..... but... . .
The MULLET is a pic - it AIN'T ME!!!! Not even in the late 80's did I have a MULLET. I thought they were Aliens that's landed on ppl' heads.

Hey Rod,

The controls front to rear - vol / blend / VTC ("vintage tone control"-same as a passive tone control on a fender jazz) which is also the push-pull active/passive switch and works in both active and passive mode /and the last control is a stacked bass/treble (boost only).

Just wanted to post a big thanks to George for the fantastic bass, I recently took the '59 Burst M5-24 off his hands and it's a beauty! Plays well, sounds great and is also light on the back, will make a fantastic gigging bass! Now if I can just find/join a band that lasts longer than a few months... :)

Cheers,

EG

Yeah, that transparent white looks absolutely gorgeous 8|

Would have been good to include it in the recent bass shootout. I wonder how it would have compared against the big bad Belman :hmm

Congrats on the 59 Burst evilgus, you lucky $^%$^%#.

Yeh, I'm really enjoying getting to know the M5-24, just can't wait to have a jam so I can really give it a loud workout! (Maybe next week!) Might be a rough approximation, but to me, it sounds something like the bolt-on, maple Ken Smith I used to own, but more practical sounding, plus a bit like my ash MTD 535, but less bright. Much better bottom-end than the Smith, though, that's why I sold that one! :)

Hey EG,
Assuming you were buying a Sadowsky 5, why the M5 over a UV or Standard? Can you describe the differences for those of us who may not be as familiar or have access to George's test room?

Cheers Chris

p.s. I have a MS5 of my own

Ive tried the UV and standard, and for me the M5 has that thick and really straightforward kind of tone. I'd prefer this for modern stuff over the SC (the SC has that strong jazz bass kind of thing going on that you cant get rid of) for jazz kind of thing.

The low b is fantastic too.

Cack, he’s my take on how I hear them -

Modern M24
Tone and performance of this bass is very tight focused and punchy. The lows get very deep and growly, the midrange is very cutting and adds nice definition, the high mids to highs are aggressive and edgy. The VTC (vintage tone control) helps tame and smooth out the high mids & highs and IMO one of the powerful features of all the Sadowsky basses. The Modern 24 with the blend control centered, has the ability to sit perfectly in the band mix without too much tweaking required. It adds just the right amount of cut and definition without being too dominating. It also has a quick response and feels very "alive" which works well for the busy players or someone who solos. I also find with the Modern, that it can be very versatile. You can dial the Modern to sound close to a more traditional Std Sadowsky jazz but it is harder vice-versa. Oh,and the B string is Killer. One of the best you’ll find on any 34” scale bass and even better than some 35’ers.

Vintage/Standards and UV70s
The pickup placement on the V/S are the same as the 60's jazz basses and the body is slightly smaller and lighter (similar in weight to the modern) than the UV70 (Ultra Vintage 70's) sadowsky models. The UV70 sadowsky's are based on the 70's jazz basses with the bigger and slightly more heavier bodies, bridge pickup is located 12mm closer to the bridge, and the necks have block inlays and side bindings.

The difference in tone between the V/S compared to the UV70's models –
With both pups blended, the V/S has a wider less focused but smooth and even sound. More rounder, warmer overall. Classic Motown, Soul groove / Old School sound with sweet definition in the highs. When you solo the bridge pup you have the classic “Jaco” burp.
The UV70 has a more punchy, aggressive sound mainly due to the pickup placement being closer the bridge. The lows are tight and can get very growly and highs are sizzly and cutting. Great for the 70's funk & rock sounds which can be very in your face.. For me the UV70 sounds it’s best with both pups open. The Bridge pup solo’ed sounds thinner to my ears compared to the V/S and similar to the Modern rear pup when solo’ed.

The UV70 has some similarities to the Modern 24. They both have that nice edgy aggressiveness in the high mids- highs but the Modern sounds a little more growly in the low – low mids especially with those Sadowsky Soapbars. The other differences worth noting is the number of frets. Modern's board is 24 frets, UV70s is 20 frets (same as the 70's jazz basses) and the V/S are 21 frets.

BTW, for the guys that are located interstate and regional areas, we do offer a “7 Day Return Policy” on all our NEW IN STOCK basses. Click this link to see the details on this - http://www.bassgeardirect.com/7%20Day%2 ... 20Bass.htm

Hey Cack,

Looks like George has covered the comparisons far better than I could, so I'll just throw in a few extra bits of info and opinion. Firstly, I have a couple of early/pre-Gibson Tobias basses that cover the warm/thick/vintage area of tone quite well, so I wasn't looking for that when I dropped into the showroom. I've also had a bit of a love/hate relationship with my ash/ash MTD 535, simply because of it's big/open sound and "harsh honesty", so was looking for something equally modern-sounding, with a punchy and cutting tone, but with a touch less finger-noise and a more defined bass-response. As soon as I played the M5, I heard exactly those things, plus a great top-end sound and snap that reminded me of Ken Smith, Alembic or some Warwick basses. (Specifically thinking of a Thumb 6 I used to have, which had Seymour Duncan pickups, which I believe are what Sadowsky uses for the M5s.)

Anyway, I think I only tried one other Sadowsky on that day, probably the sunburst MS5, and it did sound *great*, but a touch more "vintage" and it didn't "speak" to me as much as the M5 did. I can easily imagine going back and buying/ordering one of the other models at a later date, the quality and overall sound is fantastic! :)

Hope that helps a bit.

Cheers,

EG
