Cack, he’s my take on how I hear them -
Modern M24Tone and performance of this bass is very tight focused and punchy. The lows get very deep and growly, the midrange is very cutting and adds nice definition, the high mids to highs are aggressive and edgy. The VTC (vintage tone control) helps tame and smooth out the high mids & highs and IMO one of the powerful features of all the Sadowsky basses. The Modern 24 with the blend control centered, has the ability to sit perfectly in the band mix without too much tweaking required. It adds just the right amount of cut and definition without being too dominating. It also has a quick response and feels very "alive" which works well for the busy players or someone who solos. I also find with the Modern, that it can be very versatile. You can dial the Modern to sound close to a more traditional Std Sadowsky jazz but it is harder vice-versa. Oh,and the B string is Killer. One of the best you’ll find on any 34” scale bass and even better than some 35’ers.
Vintage/Standards and UV70sThe pickup placement on the V/S are the same as the 60's jazz basses and the body is slightly smaller and lighter (similar in weight to the modern) than the UV70 (Ultra Vintage 70's) sadowsky models. The UV70 sadowsky's are based on the 70's jazz basses with the bigger and slightly more heavier bodies, bridge pickup is located 12mm closer to the bridge, and the necks have block inlays and side bindings.
The difference in tone between the V/S compared to the UV70's models – With both pups blended, the V/S has a wider less focused but smooth and even sound. More rounder, warmer overall. Classic Motown, Soul groove / Old School sound with sweet definition in the highs. When you solo the bridge pup you have the classic “Jaco” burp.
The UV70 has a more punchy, aggressive sound mainly due to the pickup placement being closer the bridge. The lows are tight and can get very growly and highs are sizzly and cutting. Great for the 70's funk & rock sounds which can be very in your face.. For me the UV70 sounds it’s best with both pups open. The Bridge pup solo’ed sounds thinner to my ears compared to the V/S and similar to the Modern rear pup when solo’ed.
The UV70 has some similarities to the Modern 24. They both have that nice edgy aggressiveness in the high mids- highs but the Modern sounds a little more growly in the low – low mids especially with those Sadowsky Soapbars. The other differences worth noting is the number of frets. Modern's board is 24 frets, UV70s is 20 frets (same as the 70's jazz basses) and the V/S are 21 frets.
