Horrible tone in isolation, yes. Especially the slap. Keep in mind he's in a band with two guitarists tuned down to A - there's often not a lot of sonic room left for bass. Let's hear it in context:

(Language warning, naturally)

About the 3 minute mark onwards the guitars stay low & the bass makes a little more sense. Not what I'd choose to sound like though!

If TalkBass was a country, the national sport would be Fieldy bashing, with Adam Clayton bashing in the off-season. I've been on TB since 2005, and it's safe to say Fieldy is the most despised guy on there.

I think you're being a bit harsh. I too, don't aspire to Fieldy's tone, however, it's not that far off rockabilly slap tone, just lower. And as others have said, it fits the rest of the band.

Fieldy-billy. ... I like it :D

I must admit... Sounds TERRIBLE in isolation... Works in band context... But that still not a Korn fan does this make me

I think Fieldy is a genius.

He managed to make a boatload of money playing bass, without even learning how to play his instument.

THAT is talent gentlemen.

It's not my tone, but I bet he's making more money out of playing bass than anyone on this forum.

I'd heard that they mike up the tweeter on his cabs. Found this interview: http://www.emusician.com/news/0766/fran ... tti/144858
Korn's bass player, Fieldy [Reginald Arvizu], has a very distinctive bass sound. How do you work with that?

Fieldy likes lots of click on the top and doesn't like mid bass. His bass sits above and below the guitars, which lets them stake out that middle ground.

Do you use direct and amp sounds on him?

Yes, but 80 to 90 percent amp. I use three or four mics: the Sanken CU44X and the AT4047 on one speaker, and an AKG D36 on the other. He also has a tweeter in his cabinet for high end, and I threw a 57 on that.

Using a 57 on the tweeter makes sense as a 57 compresses those high transients nicely but they will still shine through. But again not my sort of sound....

Henry says, "it's formulaic". Right, so you're a total individual on every track too... not. :rollno:
