Phil Stack - Thirsty Merc Bassist

Post by stonecoldbass » 05 Feb 2018, 21:17

Hey Ozbassers!
Excited to bring you another Player Profile interview with a great Australian bass player: Mr. Phil Stack!
Not only does Phil hold down the low end in a mighty way for Thirsty Merc, he is also a phenomenal upright jazz player and songwriter in his own right.
It was really great to spend some time with Phil as he was in town with Thirsty Merc and we get into the nitty gritty on a lot of interesting topics!

Phil is a great guy. He was at the CON around the same time I was. What I'd give to have the amount of musicality he has in one fingertip. It's a shame people mostly know him for Thirsty Merc. His upright playing is worldclass. Think Pattitucci.

Agreed Slowlearner! Everything he does sounds so authentic, which is quite amazing considering how disparate the material is!

So Rai Thistlethwaite keeps surprising me with the projects he works on outside of Thirsty Merc, and now this guy. I feel like I need to go back and re-listen to their back catalogue with a bit more intensity...

Glad you're enjoying the interview folks! My main goal when I started all this was to showcase the amazing bass talent that exists in Melbourne and subsequently Australia, and it has since expanded to including more 'name' player, but I'm still 100% committed to bringing you local grown talent and sharing their story. Stay tuned for the next episode as it features an amazing Sydney bass player ;)
BazzBass here is the rest of that youtube video from the interview:

Cheers!

I’ve had the pleasure of opening up for Thirsty Merc a few times and they were all cool guys to hang and chat music with. Phil’s 70’s antiqua P is a beast of a bass too!
