Paul Kelly Opera House Forecourt Sunday Night

Post by Lukaas3 » 20 Nov 2017, 11:00

Grey Skies and intermittent showers appeared, as if to bring a little Melbourne itself to the Opera house forecourt in support of its most loved musical export, Mr Paul Kelly.

A sturdy set from Steve Earl, sans band sadly, warmed the crowd nicely, as did the crystal clear FOH mix presented, unusually in this writers opinion, at the perfect intersection of volume and "feel it in your chest".

Kudos too, to the stage crew and producers as the event ran to the minute as per schedule.

And so at the precise time, Mr Paul Kelly and band appeared on stage, forgoing rock n roll troubador jeans and t shirts for a respected elder statesmanlike tailored suits. Very Nice.

Dan Kelly, proudly announced as such by Uncle Paul, rocked lead guitar tele/ Fender Twin and the odd Rick for those chimey moments.

Cameron Bruce – keyboards and backing vocals,

Bill McDonald, Mr Foundation on well loved Ibanez big headstock era P bass/ 20 year old? GK 800rb and an Ampeg Fridge, incredible sounding player and rig.

Peter Luscombe – drums, percussion and rock facial expressions.

Vika and Lina Bull, BVs to die for.

And off we went, Paul Kelly has a rare talent for programming a set, he gives, he takes, but overall he builds builds builds, in this case to an intense version of a song "My god told me im right ???" which im not familiar with, but considering the times we are in, made a stark point to those attending.

Of course there were the hits, and this band of pros belted them out of the park, if you have any interest at all, please find the ABC video of the event, you will love it.

Three encores to a raptuous crowd was crowned by a six part acapella "Meet me in the middle of the Air" just beautiful.

Great Band. Great Songs, Great Night.

saw the show, sounded fantastic, no doubt Paul Kelly is the elder statesman of song writing having watched him since the early days with The Dots.
I was trying to catch what type of amp Bill Mcdonald had on top of the Ampeg fridge, seemed like it was a Gallien Krueger 800Rb to me?

Dont be fooled watching the replay,
On the night Bill McDonalds sound was massive, dominating with note length, and interesting pickup times.
