The standard customs interpretation of personal items for tax does not include stuff a company is shipping to someone. I suspect that’s true for cites too.

Ohhhh, ok.

In that case, would a CITES pre-Convention certificate from the seller (this particular guitar is 2014) be the way to go?

BTW am I right to interpret 'not at all uniformly enforced' as meaning customs check some but not necessarily all instruments coming in?

I've never had them check something of mine, I believe others have.

The full CITES paperwork (which may include an export thing with that certificate) should suffice.

I've imported at least one (secondhand) bass from Japan, since Jan 2017, with rosewood board.

Nope. It was just sent as a 'bass guitar' in a box.

I just had some trouble with importing via shipito. I sent a wood pickup cover to nordstrand for them o fit a custom pickup to. They did the job and posted it to my shipito address. It got held up by shipito as the courier I selected uses Aust Post at this end and they said Aust Post wont take any wood items. I was advised to use DHL (about a third more expersive) and list the item not using the word "wood" but by the name of the wood (in this case maple). It seems like it is through the system. I've not shipped anything in a while and found it a bit stressful.
