Finally got through the Lucas Taranto interview too - quite enjoyed it, and it's given me a bit of stuff I'll be following up on - to save people (some of) the digging:

Bent by Gary Willis
https://open.spotify.com/album/3sojlfyt5Ej9rI8Yi3QliK
Gary Willis on Bandcamp: https://garywillis.bandcamp.com

Peace Beyond Passion by Me'shell Ndegeocello
https://open.spotify.com/album/0jmwxReVZ7hNQ26bZWQ35Q

Zammuto (band)
Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1aolDYgNWRTDQWUZ8C7jZu
Bandcamp: https://zammuto.bandcamp.com/

...after doing a little bit of digging, it looks like the record that Me'shell Ndegeocello produced was not actually a Zammuto record, but linked to Zammuto via a band member and production credits, and is most likely:

Dig Deeper (EP) by SLV
Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/5cDVPFuUHQlBTFC0z7SmAZ
SLV on Bandcamp: https://officialslv.bandcamp.com/music

-------------

On a discussion note, the bit on time I found pretty interesting, Adam Neely brought that up about classical players in one of his recent videos too (tl;dr once all players have reached a point of decent internal time, they forget about it, and it becomes quite elastic - not rushing, not dragging, just moves around with the music).

On a technical note, I found the mix fairly quiet. I had a bit of trouble hearing it in my bumpy old ute hence the time it took me to get through it :(

Thanks for doing all that research and posting the relevant links Cleary! That Me'shell record in particular is just immense. Sorry you found the sound quality to be a bit lacking this time round, I'll try and make sure that the levels are a bit higher in future.
Thanks again for your feedback!

Re: Bass Lessons Melbourne 'Player Profile' Podcast! *LAUREN PIERCE - DISCOVER DOUBLE BASS!*

Post by stonecoldbass » 29 Apr 2017, 18:45

Brand new episode!!
Lauren Pierce is a recent arrival to Melbourne having lived and studied in the USA until last year. A world class musician and in-demand educator, Lauren has wealth of experience and thoughts on performing, teaching and building a career as a professional musician. She is also co-tutor over on http://www.discoverdoublebass.com a sister site to Scott's Bass Lessons with Geoff Chalmers.
It was a blast getting to play little Bach duet with her as well (see 2nd youtube video) and I'm stoked that not only is she the first double bass player to feature in the series but also the first female :)

Not much to say about this one except that it was a real privilege to get to sit down with one of today's most iconic bass players and musicians, Mr. Michael League.

Re: Bass Lessons Melbourne 'Player Profile' Podcast! *KARL RASHEED ABEL - LAURA MVULA!*

Post by stonecoldbass » 19 May 2017, 13:23

This week's player profile video/podcast features an up and coming young bass player from South London called Karl Rasheed Abel. I caught up with Karl the day after going to see him play at the Recital Centre in Melbourne with the stunningly talented Laura Mvula (check her out!)
Karl has a natural voice on the bass after many years of dedicated study both in the UK and at Berklee in the USA, it was really interesting hearing about his journey as a musician and his experience in changing from a 'jazzhead' as he puts it, to his current identity as an in demand session player.

Anoth great interview Craig! Love the enthusiasm that Karl puts into the conversation as well as his exceptional bass playing :yep

There seems to be a common thread with most of the musicians you interview, they seem such down to earth nice people. All so deserving of their success.....

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah Karl is definitely both enthusiastic and deserving of his success, the guy can lay it down hard! I think it's perhaps more of a bass player vibe to be down to earth, we don't play bass to be in the spot light that's for sure! Glad you enjoyed this one :)

Re: Bass Lessons Melbourne 'Player Profile' Podcast! *BEN WICKS - BLUES ROULETTE*

Post by stonecoldbass » 02 Jun 2017, 11:22

This one was a lot of fun to do! Ben is a real solid, tasty bass player with an ear for killer tone and a pocket that makes everything feel better. Having played with some of Australia's top blues artists like Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel, Ben has a wealth of experience both live and in studio and we delve into this during the lengthy interview below.

Re: Bass Lessons Melbourne 'Player Profile' Podcast! *JONATHAN MARON - GROOVE COLLECTIVE/MAXWELL!*

Post by stonecoldbass » 19 Jun 2017, 10:52

Hey peeps!
Player profile #28 features a true modern bass legend, Jonathan Maron!
Jonathan Maron is probably best known as one of the founding members of NYC outfit Groove Collective, as well as his iconic playing on the Maxwell cut 'Ascension'. However, after spending some time with him jamming and talking it quickly became apparent that there is so much more to Jonathans playing and approach to music than meets the eye/ear. In this interview we discuss a myriad of topics including his early influences, tone, Meshell Ndegeocello, his gorgeous sounding Yamaha bass, playing with Mark Guiliana and so much more.
If you enjoy these videos it'd be a great help if you could comment, like, share, subscribe etc; to help spread the word in the bass community and ensure these guys get the recognition that they all deserve.
Thanks!

Thoroughly enjoyed that interview Craig. Jonathan is a session chameleon and has played on so many records / with so many artists that I love. Seems like a lovely, generous cat too...

I really enjoyed this too - never heard of him, but spent yesterday afternoon listening to Maxwell.
The jam you guys had was great too - he's got a sense of melody that reminds me a bit of Me'shell.

@Dan and Bernie - yeah he was really generous with his time and we spend a good amount of time just jamming and going through his pedalboard which was awesome! I guess the Me'shell similarity may have been a factor in her hiring him, or perhaps it's something that's rubbed off on him since playing with her. Thanks for checking it out guys!
