End of rant.
Well, maybe that explains why I like playing guitars in Drop C ? :)

But I'm with Mr Mow.

Doodly doo ding dong doodily doodily doo.
Thats what drummers are for.

I think the only bass i've owned, but never really gelled with was a Ibanez ATK

Flea and Jaco wannabe sounds...

And that really dead string sound that you cannot tell what the note is.. Like a dull thud with no audible tuned note behind it.

Flats are cool, rounds are cool, both of them sound like shite when they are 20 years old..

Oh my! I tried playing a Rickenbacker once... ONCE!...
Yeah, it clicked and clanked so hard I couldn’t handle it! I’ve heard PLENTY of AWESOME recordings done with Rickenbackers, but I just can’t play one myself.

Came during the 90s when everyone had a 4x10 and their bass set on the bridge pickup with mids dialed to the max on their amp. It was something to do with punk and Primus, but I never heard Les sound like that. Similar to this is Jaco's tone on a lot of recordings. Just plain awful. Again, love Jaco's note choice, hate that nasal tone.

With flats, I can get a Rick to sound like a P bass

Correct....also poorly played and EQ'ed Ps and Js with a pick. Mainly found in shitty try hard 80's thrash metal bands.

Totally! They were all doing their, "I can sound like Duff McKagan" thing. Eww. :rollno:

P.s. I actually liked Duff's tone. He and Mike Dirnt had pick tone to die for in the late 80s/early 90s.

Massively scooped tone... but with one exception: David Ellefson's tone on the original mix of 'Rust In Peace' totally _works_ in the context of that mix. The 2004 remix/remaster just sounds wrong.
"Turn everything to 11, dump instruments in front of the amp and manipulate pedals for 5 minutes" - me.

The Rick I played WAS loaded with flats... and the owner used a plectrum on it, and it sounded great... but when I picked it up... CLANKITY-CLICKY-CLANK-A-CLINK

Yeah... I really dig Dirnt's tone on the early 90's Green Day stuff. Also I dig Mark Hoppus' sound, too

Ive found it was a ploy by many bassists in metal bands with guitarists using too much gain and dropped tunings - it was the only way they could be heard - so crank the treble and high mids......and drop anything lower than that.

Yeh Duff's tone was good - still had some bottom end to it and suited that genre of rock - gunna go listen to out ta get me and mr brownstone!

There's a couple of songs off that big album by Live that have terrible bass tone. I can't think of the exact songs right now but I remember learning them for a cover band and thinking "why would they pick this tone?!"
