Jazzmaster Bass #2

Post by BOSS302BASS » 15 Nov 2017, 09:02

Jazzmaster Bass #2 has begun construction.
In the Bat Cave at MSGM with D. Searle and R. Pryke overseeing.
Rob did a great job of selecting the boards to make up the blank. Nice and light!
David got me through the give-up stage at the very beginning - trying to modify the Jazzmaster bodyshape to make sure JM #2 will fit into a standard Fender bass case! (JM Bass #1 misses out by an inch LOL)
Luckily I still have a pair of J bass pickups from the late 70's spare for this build. And some 68 oval tuners...
Series/parallel wiring will cap it off!

It's looking good...6 hours in this body so far. Seal coats done. Color will go on it tomorrow.

The Hawaiian theme will be continued into this build...I have almost a full square metre of fibreglass laminated Tikki fabric print to use up for pickguards.

No worries Bazz, I'll snap a pic of it tomorrow. Hopefully Dave will have knocked up a template for the guard (which we also had to modify using an existing JM guitar pickguard template like a French curve to make a pleasing and plausible shape) so i can cut it tomorrow. I also have enough 0.4mm aluminum stock to make a pickguard shield as well. Fake period-correct Fenders R Us...

Body will get finished off on Tuesday. Neck next. Pickguard also should be done by Saturday.
Aluminum shield cut job will be fun too. Brass shields for all the cavities - mustn't forget them...

Neck cut out and squared, truss rod in, a rosewood fretboard selected, milled down to 3mm and then snapped while trying to clamp it to radiused neck. Oh well...it's been one of those weeks. Back to the rosewood pile...

Today did a short session with David - rectified the veneer fretboard dilemma. We snapped one trying to clamp and glue it down on Saturday. Dave and Rob brainstormed the issue - trying to think back in time to how Fender did it for so many decades with all their rosewood veneer fretboards after about 1962. The answer ended up being so simple it was hilarious. Hot water. Today we milled down a second fretboard to 2.5mm, bunged it in a tub of hot (not boiling) water and let it sit for 5 minutes. Pulled it out, wiped the glue side down, spread Titebond on the neck side, and clamped away. Gently at first, but it bent so easily to the radius on the neck that we just laughed. Problem solved. Fret slotting and frets and tuner bores to come on Friday! Then a neck carve on Saturday hopefully...

I think I'm missing something here.

Does the neck in this case have a radius? This sounds like something different to putting the radius on the top of the fretboard and gluing that onto a flat neck.

I'm intrigued :hmm

Certainly is a radius on the neck for a veneer fretboard, how novel! Here's what it looks like when finished on the right, compared to the 'standard' on the left (instead of 1,000 words).

They your necks, Nick? Interesting to see a slab board from 66!
