So no stacked pots at all? You might have to pull back to three band (nooooooo!)
No, I'm talking passive here, Nick, only vol/vol/tone. Zero-band ... .

Michael

Passive.... I still think you’re joking somehow. Empty holes need filling... you’re a bigger man than me, my OCD wouldn’t allow it.

Dummy pots.

My first Q (the double reverse) is passive, and I actually don’t mind ... .

Nothing wrong with passive. I'm starting to wonder why we bother with onboard preamps when there are so many stomp box preamps around, and you just need one for all your basses.

Plus with all the mucking around I've done with recording bass, passive always sounds best to me. :2c:

I wouldn’t go quite that far, Ivan, I like the convenience of doing some minor adjustments on the go. I mostly play live with a wireless so it’s just nice to boost the mids a little while being on the other side of the stage.
You need a good pickup/pre combination though, and I find the Delano/Nordstrand combo very responsive as well as whisper-quiet.

Michael

Ok I'll concede to that. It would definitely be useful in that situation where you're using a wireless and are not standing near your amp or your stomp box preamp :p

Unless you don’t want all your basses to sound the same...

Finally the fretboard glue-up for the spalted maple build. Using the good old araldite for this, needed/wanted more viscous stuff, and the araldite was like honey on a cold day. Perfectly even squeeze-out, super-happy.

Some updates on the 2 current builds.

The Spalted Maple Q fretboard glued up beautifully, and the neck is now ready for carving. No pics, totally boring stuff.

The NT Kermit has made some progress.
Sawed off the cutaways of the walnut body wings, took down the part of the neck where the wings attach to just over 28 mm (will require some more removal of material), and glued the book match top together. Also cut and thicknesses to 3 mm pieces of the quilted maple for matching headstock and electronics cover, and glued the quilted maple piece onto the headstock.

Neck and body wings from the back:

And here's the "top sandwich", a layer of light veneer between the walnut and the wenge, the wenge and the quilted maple top (completely raw, much "pop" to happen later):

Good news on the electronics front: Should get a delivery of 4 Delano pickups early next week so I can get the P routes finished and prepare the Spalted Q body for spraying.

Slow progress at the moment, bit sick, lots of other things happening - apologies to the eager readers of this blog.

Michael

Bad, Michael, bad.

Browsing my favourite supplier's web site and just couldn't help myself.

Let's start off a little restrained. Afrormosia (never heard of it but looks nice):

Couple of beautiful maple burls with plenty of potential:

And some bocote - have heard of it but never seen pieces quite like this:

Anyone interested in a "Timber Addict Anonymous" group in Melbourne? ;)

I feel like it would be more enabling that restraint, take MSGM for example.
