One more today. Works for me:

natural grain:

this would be the grain if finished as is:

TimberMate applied:

TimberMate removed:

Sanded to 180, do 240 a couple of times with damp cloth treatment in between (and that includes the front), and we're good to spray. OK, still need to do the battery compartment rout and the opening for the jack (pilot already drilled). Nice to see this moving a ling a little.

Michael

OK, one more as a teaser. This is the amboyna burl with a little bit of methylated spirits to give an indication of what the final top would look like. Only the central area was wiped:

Amazing, really.

That amboyna is spectacular. Where is that species grown?

Just looked it up myself.

The plant genus is actually Pterocarpus (in the same family as peas, beans etc. - doesn't really mean much since it's a very BIG family).
Most Pterocarpus species apparently are sold as "padauk" (see further up in this thread for examples), and wood from Pterocarpus macrocarpus (also known as the Burmese padauk tree) is "marketed" as amboyna if it has the burl figure.

Wikipedia gives Africa and Asia as places of origin for padauks in general, and (as already mentioned) Burma for the amboyna.

Hope that helps. I just learned something new.

Michael

You could have just said you didnt know :P

Whilst I was aware of Padauk, thanks for going above and beyond as always! Very interesting.

Where would be the fun in that? I personally believe in "life-long learning" and found what I found pretty interesting myself - would never have thought that it is basically a form of padauk but there you go.

A little more: the Pterocarpus are also in the Dalbergia group (or at least pretty closely related) - that should ring a bell considering rosewood is on the CITES list!
So get your padauk/amboyna burl before it, too, will be restricted.

Michael

At home trying not to cough my lungs out - been sick since Monday, and loading out in the rain after last night's gig didn't help.

This arrived today: replacement pre for my very first build (the Red Baron). I used the Glockenklang from that in the Kermit 5-string after Not being convinced the SD route works for me.

Great presentation, I might even try and put it all in (incl. soldering) myself.

No real progress on anything else (really wasn't up to it this week).

Regards,
Michael

I definitely agree re the presentation. That's a great way to package a preamp. The wiring looks so nice and neat too.

Did you purchase it from BBG?

Hmm, that balance/volume with push pull active/passive looks mighty familiar, then I zoom in and see MEC, ha! And Noll are marketing the same component (functionally if not actually) under their own name on BBG, but the pre is their contribution and they don’t make pots either (Alpha) so why bother I guess. Stick to the bit you can do well.

I’d be keen to hear what you think about the difference between the glock and the noll. I’ll likely be shopping for a preamp soon, shock horror I hear you say! I’m surprised too, we shall see if it sticks. I do like the idea of passive pre with passive tone on the glock, might get me over the line regardless. Safety net much...

Clearly you want a HAZ clone from the other Canadian Sheldon!

Yes, Ivan, BBG. If they have stock they’re really quick. If not, well, I’m sure I’ll get the items ordered 4-5 weeks ago eventually.

Nick, I suppose the secret sauce is in the blue block, and nothing wrong with using non-homebrew components.

And Bruce, sorry, have never heard of Hazlab pres, and who is that other Sheldon?

More good news today: Delano pickups are on their way from Germany (via Canberra) which means I should be able to get the spalted body ready for spraying very soon (the P routs need a little attention in the corners, and I need the pickup to do that properly).

Michael

Sheldon of SNCpre fame, makes HAZ clones (the pre in most US Spectors). Probably not a bad choice for a Warwick shaped thing.

I'll check it out.

And back in the box, stored for another project with 2 pickups down the track. The combined vol/balance pot is just a little bit too tall - but I honestly don't have 2-3 mm to play with. Had I not sunk the pot holes I'd be OK, after all the Red Baron is a massive 37 mm thick.

Oh well, will be going passive after all (how does vol/vol/tone sound?) with 2 dummy pots.

Michael

So no stacked pots at all? You might have to pull back to three band (nooooooo!)
