Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

I limit myself to one source and only look every 3 - 4 weeks.

Fortunately they didn't have too many items I couldn't say no to (it all boils down to personal taste of course), and I am very thankful there was no appealing spalted maple in sight (arrrggghhh, the bane of my existence, spalted maple). Can't wait to see the amboyna burl though!!

Having said that, a trip to Mathews is just around the corner, ash, silky oak, walnut, maple, wenge and maybe purple heart are all on the "wanted" list. Better make sure the credit card has enough buffer ... .

Regards,
Michael

P.S.: I've got this mental picture of the quilted maple piece dyed in the blue a little further up, or in a similarly brilliant red ...

Nice work!  And this isn't a full time job??
It's been weeks since I've touched my build - finding time is hard.

Lots of holes:

Unfortunately the push-in threaded inserts won't ship until early March so if I'm finished with everything else before then I'll simply have to wait. Bad organisational process at my end.

Lots more holes elsewhere: electronics compartment and cover, tuning machines, and pot holes (many ways to interpret that one, I'll leave this up to you).

The blue, by the way, has changed. It's not more a faded blue jeans look on the back with areas where there's a very definitive green-ish hue. Apparently there's some sort of reaction going on with whatever was present in the wood. Something to keep in mind for future applications. I personally love it even more, it's an absolutely unique development.

Not sure about the blue fretboard anymore. Spent about 3-4 hours on the neck over the weekend, another session of about the same duration required. Still a little chunky (20.5 at fret 1, 25 at fret 12) ;) .

Regards,
Michael

Bit of a mock-up.

Everything fits snug, electronics comp is just big enough. Headstock will lose about 20 mm in length, another design fine-tuning effort (always felt it was too long).
Still not really sure about a blue fretboard ... .

How about some photoshop work to mock up a blue fretboard and compare side by side. Could be interesting......would definitely look less conventional.

Less conventional is good - I take that as a yes from Ivan.

Don't have PS so it's either do or don't ... .

Come to think of it, I think a blue fretboard would look good on this bass. It would have to match the blue bits I can see on the body though. :2c:

Hmmm. It's not going to match, the northern ash and the maple "develop" the colour quite differently - see samples earlier in this thread.

I think the blue so far is cheeky, like “hello, what’s all this then...” but doing the fretboard too might be clobbering over the head a bit with colour.

Maybe......I'm not sure now. Glad I don't have to make the decision :)

Thanks, Ivan and Nick,

I am eternally grateful for your consistent advice ;) .

It's a prototype. Yes, I'll be playing it but it is supposed to help me find out what works and what doesn't, and maybe be "out there" - why not.

Compromise thought: I'll just do the bit from the last fret to the end of the board in blue ... .

Michael

I actually ended up with something similar using some software. This is not what it would look like though.

I don’t think the whole blue would look as nice as the maple contrast.
