Re: Rob Kidd custom 4-string, Hipshot tremolo system...

Thanks for the kind words! A couple of amendments! -The pickup is one that I wound, with alnico magnets- a humbucker sort of similar to a p bass pickup. (I was given the trem system and a gibson style sidewinder by mike tobias as we had built a few custom jobs for the naam show when I was working fo...

Re: Female bass players

If you're in brisbane, you have to check out Helen Russel. She taught me for a year or so at uni. Really wonderful player. Mostly known as an upright player, but she is a really tasty electric player too. and I'll throw another vote for Gail Dorsey - I got to meet her when i was working in the US, a...

Re: Help!! Which Poweramp for a rack system

I bought a QSC last year for around $1500 for the same reason. I love my rig (giles valve pre, australian monitor 1k2, eden and EV cabs), but the 1k2 weighs 20 kgs. so with the pre in its heavy box and transformers etc my bass head alone is around 30kgs. I play pub rock covers etc and i have had thi...

Re: Acoustic and fretless

There was a great luthier in Briz called Gary Albrecht who used to make a small bodied acoustic bass that was as loud as hell- especially with a pick. Could easily compete with an acoustic around the campfire. It was a strange looking thing - made mostly of carbon fibre, but It was less than $2k. Un...

Re: Rob Kidd custom 4-string, Hipshot tremolo system...

Aww shucks guys! thanks for the kind words! Hi Bill! long time no speak! Forgot to mention that the bass is in Melbourne. I'm happy to post her anywhere, though... found a vid of me playing her a couple of years ago. (Did I really have those sideburns?!!) Can't really hear the bass too well, but any...

Rob Kidd custom 4-string, You Tube!...

Hi everyone, This is a bass I made for myself a few years ago. Its seen a few gigs plus a few sessions, and aside from a few scratches to the rear plastic covers, its in near perfect condition... http://robkidd.homestead.com/files/SoloBlueOxFront.jpg Hipshot ultralight machines, rolling string tree,...

Re: Is there a place for Bass effects in a rock band

some fx i've had in the past. ebs chorus - pretty much the only chorus pedal that i could use through a whole song - really well voiced - not too subtle like the old brown boss one, and still had clear bottem end... akai deep impact. crazy stuff - really only useful for a feature or a muse covers ba...

Re: onboard preamp - found one! build thread

a bit of both. best bet to wire the bypass like it is in the schematic- true bypass, or replace the input resistor with a cap and a resistor to earth and switch the output not the input. - you can get three pole stomp switches so you can keep the led. Oh and I'd run a larger output cap - say 4.7 or ...

Re: Pitch Shifter

drop d. I detune on the fly in songs, and I don't have a hipshot on any of my 4-strings.

just look at where the tuner key starts and finishes from E to D. Its just over a quarter tune on my two main basses... piece of cake.

Re: Fender USA Std Jazz 2005 Truss Rod Stripped

next time, remove and lube the nut threads first- especially if its hard to shift, (although this is not always possible, if the access is limited, or if it is a dual action rod...) and yeah make sure you own imperial and metric allen keys... oh and lube the threads of the new nut of course... yeah ...

Re: neck bending?

yes, this is what cheap basses do. (some expensive ones too!) make sure you use some lube on the truss rod nut. - a little GP grease on a toothpick is fine. if it needs mega cranking to take out the bow, make sure you only crank it with the strings totally slack. ideally, some creative fretdressing ...

Re: Where to get a bass resprayed/refinished in Melbourne???

wow, that's pretty wild cracking. I'm a luthier and I've never seen this... Is the cracking just the black? - what I mean is that in the cracks themselves, is it bare timber? or is it a hard clear coat? most solid body factory guitars with a solid gloss finish have a hard clear sealer on the timber....
