Re: is there even a PJ set that works?

I really need to start embracing other formats Ha, well that might be a bit drastic. Just think outside the box. Forget about sets. Instead try hot J and a low-ish output P, and you'll be on your way. I doesn't matter if they come from different winders. And FWIW, I'd also recommend a hum-cancellin...

Re: is there even a PJ set that works?

FWIW, a few years ago I made a demo vid of my JB4 blend pot a while back when this came up on tb. https://vimeo.com/181735167 First passive, then I switch on the pre. (Sorry about the link. I don't know how to embed vimeo...) I know that sounds a bit confrontational I'm not sure what you mean by thi...

Re: is there even a PJ set that works?

You can make any P/J set work with active mixing. But if you want to stay passive, or at least mix passively before a preamp, I'd strongly recommend trying what I've done with my 80's JB4. The J is the original Dimarzio - hot, mid-rangey, adjustable pole pieces. The P is underwound alnico 5. A typic...

Re: De-weirding my P bass

I love this bass just as it is. If I returned to luthiery, my instruments would be just like this I think. Simple, functional. Nothing there that isn't needed. If this is your first instrument, congrats!

Re: OPINION: What do you hate/dislike most about your equipment?

1: That I've compromised my tone because I've have a few (minor, thankfully) back probs in the last few years. I've recently solved an impedance issue with my QSC, but it still doesn't kick like my old (20kg) Aussie monitor. And the Aguilar lightweight 12, well I still see this as the best of a bad ...

Hot tip for techs and modsters...

I bought one of these last week for 10 bucks on clearance at my local (big green) hardware store. Original $$ was around 40 I think. http://www.wagneraustralia.com.au/catalogue/diy/preparation-and-protection/heat-guns//ht-400-precision-heat-tool#/overview I've used a cumbersome el cheapo ozito, the ...

Re: Sire v7 5 String string balance fix - if you're game

Firstly, never rest your soldering iron on a guitar . Even if it's cold, it will scratch if bumped and if hot, well.... :hellno: Later in the vid, this bloke rests the iron on his bench. Also a very bad habit. Use a decent holder. They are cheap and easy to get. Anyway, rant over... :p This ...

Re: Tilt back mods

Around 15 years ago I made a trolly that has hinged triangular flaps and locking pins that hold a speaker up like a wedge. The nice thing is you can wheel it around like this at a sound check. It fits both of my speakers, although I only use the flaps for the 210. Plus the triangles offer two angles...

Re: Future Builds - Maybe Random

Hey Rob, have you used that product yourself? Does it sand well or is a PITA? Hi Phil. No, I just discovered it a couple of years ago and I don't really build much stuff these days. But I think it would be worth a shot. I met the rep for this company and from his description, it soulds just like th...

24 ml of ultra-clear araldite Hi Michael, you may want to check out a product called International Everdure. https://international-yachtpaint.com/en/au/boat-paint-products/primers/everdure You can get the 500ml kit at a handful of Bunnings stores (large ones, near water). Or I guess places like whi...

Re: Stripping a stained body

paint stripper will barely work on this type of finish. if you have a cool dark place to keep the body, stripper can stay wet overnight, but will probably need 4 or 5 applications. A heat gun and scraper is far more efficient. then finish sand by hand through 3-4 grits. the edges/sides will be very ...

Re: De actifying my P Deluxe

Marcus Miller Jazz It may be different these days, but for some reason, the MM jazz was not wired with a true-bypass active-passive switch. This means the impedence of the preamp input is always loading the pickups, even in passive mode. This will notaceably dull the passive tone. And moreso when y...

Re: Another dumb bass bridge question

The thing about fender bridges is that the saddles move around. I guess they jerk slightly to the side each time you pick a note, sort of like the recoil from a gun. My '73 P drove me crazy because of this, until I made a new tailpiece from brass. Originally, the saddles had maybe half a millimetre ...
