Pitbull kits are great fun to use as a starting point. Most of the hardware isn't great but you can put any hardware/finish on it that you want without risking an expensive body/neck. I drive ~700kms/wk, on a mix of dirt, good rural and city roads. I have a Hyundai Santa Fe which is huge inside, diesel so cheap to run for it's size and has plenty of power and torque for overtaking, hills, towing etc. All seats can fold completely flat so it makes tetrising stuff really easy.
